Locally acquired mosquito-borne malaria has not occurred in the United States since 2003 when eight cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/shelter-dogs-about-to-be-rescued-in-australia-shot-dead-to-keep-volunteers-from-leaving-homes-to-pick-them-up-2\/\" title=\"Shelter Dogs About To Be Rescued In Australia Shot Dead To Keep Volunteers From Leaving Homes To Pick Them Up\">locally acquired<\/a> <em>P. vivax<\/em> malaria were identified in Palm Beach County, FL,\u201d the CDC said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/han\/2023\/han00494.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the health agency, malaria, a disease common in tropical African countries, should be treated as a \u201cmedical emergency,\u201d but most Americans have an \u201cextremely low\u201d risk of contracting the disease. The sickness is described as having flu-like symptoms, including fevers, shaking, chills, vomiting, body aches, and nausea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere is no evidence to suggest the cases in the two states (Florida and Texas) are related. In Florida, four cases within close geographic proximity have been identified, and active surveillance for additional cases is ongoing. Mosquito surveillance and control measures have been implemented in the affected area,\u201d the CDC said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2020, an estimated 627,000 people died of malaria around the world, with most deaths occurring in impoverished areas. Malaria is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/malaria\/malaria_worldwide\/impact.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">most prominent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, India, and large parts of Indonesia.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most cases of malaria in the U.S. involve travelers infected with malaria coming into the U.S., where they are then bitten by a mosquito that passes the parasite on to another person. According to Texas health officials, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/news-alerts\/health-advisory-locally-acquired-malaria-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">there are<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/first-locally-transmitted-cases-of-malaria-found-in-u-s-in-two-decades\/\" title=\"First local malaria cases in U.S. in 20 years.\">120 travel-related malaria cases<\/a> in the state each year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The case in Texas was recorded in Cameron County, located at the southeast tip of the state bordering Mexico. The cases in Florida were in Sarasota County, between Tampa and Fort Myers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nbc-poll-shows-gop-becoming-party-of-blue-collar-workers\/\" title=\"NBC Poll Shows GOP Becoming Party Of Blue-Collar Workers\">mid-20th century<\/a>, malaria was quite common in the U.S. During the Civil War, more than one million Union soldiers came down with the disease, leading to about 10,000 deaths during the conflict, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/historybug\/civilwar2\/gallnippers.html#:~:text=There%20were%20over%201.3%20million,the%20disease%20were%20comparatively%20lower.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to some estimates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multiple American presidents also contracted malaria during their lives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/malaria-the-evil-spirit-of-the-white-house-the-first-lady-s-illness-part-two.htm#:~:text=George%20Washington%2C%20Abraham%20Lincoln%2C%20and,miasmas%2C%20and%20%E2%80%9Cmusketoes.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including<\/a> George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S.
