Suzan DelBene of Washington, who heads the DCCC, failed to report up to $5.5 million in stock sales in the time allotted under federal law.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, the disclosures were made long after the deadline had expired.<\/p>\n<p>In a June 14 filing, DelBene reported that she and her husband had sold stock in tech giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/microsoft-update-will-make-xbox-carbon-aware-consoles-will-automatically-shut-based-regional-carbon-intensity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> in two separate transactions on Aug. 30, 2022, and March 1, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The stock sale was worth somewhere between $1.25 million and $5.5 million, according to the report; members of Congress aren\u2019t required to disclose exact figures under law.<\/p>\n<p>However, what members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/prominent-democrat-announces-bid-become-first-transgender-member-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congress<\/a>\u00a0<em>are<\/em> required to do is to report securities purchases or sales no later than 45 days after they or their spouse make them under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/112th-congress\/senate-bill\/2038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you with a Common Core math education, let me assure you that, in neither case, did DelBene hit the deadline. The March 1 transaction was reported 105 days after it was made, the August 2022 transaction 288 days after it was made.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMembers of Congress from both parties are missing these deadlines and not disclosing transactions when they\u2019re supposed to according to the law, which in and of itself, from a first principle standpoint, is a really bad thing because you have lawmakers who are not following the law that they made,\u201d Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/brookings-institution-boosts-china-initiatives-linked-to-board-member\/\" title=\"Brookings Institution Boosts China Initiatives Linked to Board Member\">government affairs manager<\/a> at the Project on Government Oversight, told Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOftentimes, if you aggregate members of Congress\u2019 trades and transactions, they tend to over-perform the rest of us and over-perform the market,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is definitely the appearance of impropriety and the appearance of potential corruption there that is corrosive to public trust in Congress and individual members of Congress. So, it\u2019s a big problem,\u201d Hedtler-Gaudette said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Unfortunately, don\u2019t expect this to pose any problem for DelBene \u2014 or any other Congress member who fails to comply with the law.<\/p>\n<p>In January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/congress-stock-act-violations-senate-house-trading-2021-9#sen-dianne-feinstein-a-democrat-from-california-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Insider<\/a> revealed that 78 members of Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nancy-pelosi-caves-will-acquiesce-bipartisan-pressure-stock-trading-ban-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had violated the STOCK Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What happened to them? Virtually nothing.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhile lawmakers who violate the STOCK Act face a fine, the penalty is usually small \u2014 $200 is the standard amount \u2014 or waived by House or Senate ethics officials. Ethics watchdogs and even some members of Congress have called for stricter penalties or even a ban on federal lawmakers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/after-ethics-review-fed-bars-top-officials-from-trading-individual-stocks\/\" title=\"After Ethics Review, Fed Bars Top Officials From Trading Individual Stocks\">trading individual stocks<\/a>,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Capitol Hill, lawmakers seriously debated such a ban, with a vote on a consensus bill seemingly imminent during early autumn. But Democrats, who enjoyed majorities in the House and Senate through January 2023, did not press legislation forward, and a bill to ban lawmakers from trading stocks ultimately died.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, the STOCK Act supplies yet more proof that Congress likes enacting legislation with too-cute acronyms much more than solving the problem that legislation was designed to address.<\/p>\n<p>Business Insider noted that the 78 members who violated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lawlessness-bidens-wh-top-admin-official-fails-report-240000-stock-trades-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STOCK Act<\/a>, when commenting on the offenses, \u201coffer excuses including ignorance of the law, clerical errors, and mistakes by an accountant.\u201d And \u2014 wouldn\u2019t you know it \u2014 so did Rep. DeBene!<\/p>\n<p>According to the congresswoman, the transactions happened after her husband \u2014 a former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mainstream-media-and-big-techs-seismic-shift-to-the-left\/\" title=\"Mainstream Media and Big Tech\u2019s Seismic Shift to the Left\">top executive<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/microsoft-fined-20m-govt-learns-children-without-parent-permission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> \u2014 was confirmed to a senior role at the Department of Veterans Affairs.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn March 2022, the DelBenes disclosed a forward contract, which put in place a self-executing stock sale schedule at a set price related to compensation from Mr. DelBene\u2019s previous employment,\u201d a DelBene representative said in a statement to Fox News. \u201cThis forward contract was drafted by ethics experts and approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entirety of the contract was disclosed over a year ago and it has not been altered since. The DelBenes cannot adjust or initiate any actions related to the forward contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese transactions fall under the original forward contract but are being reported separately in the interest of transparency after consulting with the House Ethics Committee and the Department of Veterans Affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This jumble of legalese, while indeed very well crafted, still doesn\u2019t offer a cogent excuse for the DelBenes\u2019 inability to make the deadline, according to Cedric Payne, vice president and general counsel for the Campaign Legal Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe member missed the deadline for paying the stock transaction. That part is clear,\u201d Payne told Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe constant violations of the law show that the disclosure requirement is not enough,\u201d he added. \u201cThe members cannot comply with the filing deadline and sometimes you still have the appearance of conflicts of interest. Therefore, there needs to be [restrictions] where members are not allowed to own individual stocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s ironic is that DelBene is one of the members who signed onto the Transparent Representation Upholding Service and Trust, or (sigh) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TRUST<\/a>, Act, which would ban members of Congress or their spouses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pelosis-husband-snags-5-million-special-stock-vote-billions-subsidies-industry-expected-next-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from trading individual stocks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether that gets passed is anyone\u2019s guess \u2014 but while signing onto the bill may have made DelBene look good, that doesn\u2019t mean she has to like it, <em>believe<\/em> in it or act accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/top-dem-congresswoman-appears-violated-federal-law-big-way\/\">Top Dem Congresswoman Appears to Have Violated Federal Law in Big Way<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The Western Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee&#8217;s chairwoman, Rep.
