Former President Donald Trump<\/a> and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis<\/a> \u2014 the two leading candidates<\/a> for the Republican Party presidential nomination \u2014 took different stances this week on whether the House of Representatives should vote to impeach U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland over his actions, or lack thereof, while in office.<\/p>\n

The remarks come after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said that the recent allegations made<\/a> by IRS whistleblowers that Garland interfered with U.S. Attorney David Weiss\u2019 criminal investigation into President Joe Biden\u2019s son, Hunter Biden, could lead to Garland being impeached from office.<\/p>\n

McCarthy told<\/a> Fox News on Monday: \u201cIf it comes true what the IRS whistleblower is saying, we\u2019re going to start impeachment inquiries<\/a> on the attorney general<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump was asked on the \u201cThe Howie Carr Show\u201d on Monday if he thinks that Garland should be impeached, and he declined to get involved.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m gonna leave that up to them,\u201d Trump said of the Republican-controlled House. \u201cI\u2019m surprised at Merrick Garland, because I know he\u2019s a liberal guy. But I thought that\u2013<\/span>, I am so surprised that he\u2019s doing what he\u2019s doing. I\u2019m shocked, actually, that he\u2019s not saying, \u2018Look, I have an obligation to my country.\u2019 And even if he did 10%, it\u2019s earth shattering. But he\u2019s really protecting Biden, and you can\u2019t really protect them at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis was asked by Fox News on Tuesday if he would support Republican efforts to impeach Garland \u201cbecause some Republicans believe the Justice Department has been using its resources to attack a political adversary\u201d and he said that he would support the effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, look, if a cabinet member\u2019s behaving like Garland, then they\u2019re opening themselves up to it. So, I think that they should pursue this,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cI think some of the decisions that have been made or action, or lack of action, you know, are just unbelievable that that could be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n
