REUTERS\/Mike Segar<br \/>\n        <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>U.S. Judge Denies Bid to Dismiss Criminal Charges Against Democratic Megadonor<\/h2>\n<p>A U.S. judge on Tuesday denied Democratic megadonor Sam Bankman-Fried&#8217;s bid to have criminal charges against him thrown out, paving the way for the founder of now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX to face trial starting Oct. 2.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/defend-scotus-ads-beacon?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=beaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023maybeaconscotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/defend-scotus-ads-beacon?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=beaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023maybeaconscotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Allegations of Fraud and Illegal Political Contributions<\/h3>\n<p>Federal prosecutors in Manhattan say Bankman-Fried, 31, stole billions of dollars in FTX customer funds to plug losses at his hedge fund, Alameda Research, misled investors and lenders, and illegally made contributions to U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/microsoft-targeted-by-hacking-group-backed-by-chinese-government\/\" title=\"Microsoft Targeted By Hacking Group Backed By Chinese Government\">political campaigns<\/a> in the names of his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried is accused of making more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dem-megadonor-sbf-charged-with-donor-fraud-in-new-indictment\/\" title=\"Dem Megadonor SBF Charged With Donor Fraud in New Indictment\">300 illegal political donations<\/a>, using straw donors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-throws-cold-water-on-dem-megadonor-sbfs-push-to-dismiss-charges\/\" title=\"Judge Throws Cold Water on Dem Megadonor SBF's Push To Dismiss Charges\">direct corporate funds<\/a> to campaign committees while bypassing contribution limits. More than 95 percent of Bankman-Fried&#8217;s contributions went to Democrats and Democratic committees, the Washington Free Beacon reported. The crypto CEO and his cofounders at FTX gave more than $300,000 to members of the House committee that investigated the company&#8217;s collapse.<\/p>\n<p>The onetime billionaire has pleaded not guilty. He has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-paves-way-for-dem-megadonor-sbf-to-face-trial\/\" title=\"Judge allows Democratic megadonor SBF to proceed to trial.\">acknowledged inadequate risk management<\/a> at FTX, but denies stealing funds.<\/p>\n<h3>Dismissal Request Denied<\/h3>\n<p>In May, Bankman-Fried asked U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan to dismiss at least 11 of the 13 fraud and conspiracy charges he faced.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that some were based on a legal theory of fraud that has been invalidated by the U.S. Supreme Court, and that some were improperly brought without consent from the Bahamas, where he was arrested in December and extradited to the United States.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/defend-scotus-ads-beacon?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=beaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023maybeaconscotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/defend-scotus-ads-beacon?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=beaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023maybeaconscotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The arguments are either moot or without merit,&#8221; Kaplan wrote in a ruling on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Bankman-Fried did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indicted FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried leaves New York City Court after his bid to dismiss criminal charges is denied.
