When libertarian Barry Goldwater won the Republican nomination in 1964, California Governor Pat Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/1964-republican-convention-revolution-from-the-right-915921\/\">cl<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/1964-republican-convention-revolution-from-the-right-915921\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/1964-republican-convention-revolution-from-the-right-915921\/\">imed<\/a> the \u201cstench of fascism is in the air.\u201d And since that time, every major Republican presidential candidate has been branded a fascist or something approximating one. Even oppressively anodyne moderates like Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan really just wanted to throw black Americans back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5gII8D-lzbA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">into chains<\/a> and old people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kenrapoza\/2012\/08\/12\/liberal-group-throws-granny-off-cliff-again\/?sh=7e099e1d8286\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">off cliffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1251460394\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-521b7dec0e0141cbfcd2e5cba18bee4f fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-521b7dec0e0141cbfcd2e5cba18bee4f\"><\/div>\n<p>In recent years, though, Democrats have transformed the entire political debate into one pitting the forces of \u201cdemocracy\u201d against authoritarianism. Not that long ago, for the first time in American history, a president gave a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hey-joy-reid-lets-talk-about-fascism\/\" title=\"Hey Joy Reid, let's discuss 'fascism'.\">prime-time speech accusing voters<\/a> of the opposition party of turning to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/08\/25\/biden-trump-philosophy-semi-fascism-00053831\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">semi-fascism<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h2>\u201cNow you need to vote to literally save democracy again,\u201d<\/h2>\n<p> the president warned. And the only way to save democracy was by empowering one-party rule \u2014 a position that should sound counterintuitive to anyone who\u2019s ever read a book.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, it is exceedingly unlikely that Reid or Biden could define \u201cfascism\u201d as anything other than policy positions they oppose. Quite conveniently, every Dem policy, from energy to taxes to voter ID, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/25\/democrats-the-only-way-to-save-democracy-is-one-party-rule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">essential<\/a> in saving \u201cdemocracy.\u201d And, conversely, even innocuous acts of governance by Republicans are framed as <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/21\/washington-post-exposes-ron-desantis-nefarious-plot-to-govern-as-a-conservative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nefarious<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that many of the ideas Democrats propose are \u2026 well, let\u2019s call them, fascist adjacent. This is unsurprising considering the rise of progressivism and the death of liberalism within the American left.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5f978f46d48bd00eb7f579befe7cf2a1 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5f978f46d48bd00eb7f579befe7cf2a1\"><\/div>\n<p>In fascist economies, for instance, a powerful centralized state led by a demagogue plays on the nationalistic impulses of people to control manufacturing and commerce while dictating prices and wages for the good of the people. Does anyone doubt most contemporary Democrats would give the state control of the energy or health care or information sector if they could?<\/p>\n<p>Anyone opposing these statist and technocratic ideas is accused of engaging in unpatriotic acts <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS\/status\/1412120659820437505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and<\/a> \u201cbetting against\u201d the people. There is no room for debate here.<\/p>\n<p>Excessive profits are captured by the state. Handing it over is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna26771716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">patriotic<\/a>.\u201d Economic activity is for the collective good. And crony, private industries that sign on to the cultural, economic, and ideological objectives of the party are rewarded by the state.<\/p>\n<p>It is a shame that the same kind of destructive economic statism is again being popularized on the right. And I am not a fan of DeSantis\u2019 punishing Disney for involving itself in a political issue. All of this <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/07\/when-desantis-targets-a-corporation-hes-a-fascist-when-democrats-do-it-theyre-heroes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has been<\/a> the <em>modus operandi <\/em>of Democrats for decades.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a1bbd7b6c84245298a1b250a8d636035 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a1bbd7b6c84245298a1b250a8d636035\"><\/div>\n<p>Indeed, when Biden promises to \u201ctransform\u201d and \u201cremake\u201d the entire auto industry \u2014 one of our biggest \u2014 \u201cfirst with carrots, now with sticks,\u201d as The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/12\/joe-bidens-ev-edict-isnt-just-harmful-its-fascistic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes<\/a>, everyone is fine with it. Where does the president derive his power to hand out carrots to an industry that does its bidding? The Washington Post and Biden are unbothered by the trappings of Congress or legislation or choice. If the goal is important enough, our leader can do it by edict. You know, like they do in \u201cdemocracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only institution that, on occasion, stops the president from abusing his power is the Supreme Court, which is not inconsequentially one of the few institutions not in the hands of the left \u2014 in case you were wondering why there is a concerted effort to destroy it.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, a real \u201cdemocracy\u201d does not demand ideological conformity from its people. A \u201cdemocracy\u201d doesn\u2019t create expectations for us to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/15\/no-democrats-these-are-not-your-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bow our<\/a> heads to ideological flags and emblems that have zero to do with the founding or the stated ideals of the nation. That\u2019s the kind of thing fascists do.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the authoritarians who believe unfettered speech is a threat to \u201cdemocracy.\u201d I\u2019m not a professional political scientist, but when the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/read-the-emails-advertising-fbi-event-to-honor-ketanji-brown-jacksons-nomination\/\" title=\"Read the Emails Advertising FBI Event To Honor Ketanji Brown Jackson\u2019s Nomination\">powerful law enforcement agency<\/a> in the country is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/30\/zuckerbergs-admission-of-fbi-meddling-in-2020-election-is-even-bigger-than-it-seems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instructing<\/a> giant rent-seeking communication companies to censor news to help elect preferred candidates, that sounds pretty fascist-y to me. What kind of \u201cdemocracy\u201d has a White House \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/01\/30\/government-has-no-business-rooting-out-misinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flagging<\/a>\u201d \u201cproblematic posts\u201d and threatening corporations who do not \u201croot out\u201d \u201cmisleading\u201d speech with consequences? What kind of \u201cdemocracy\u201d sets up a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/04\/bidens-ministry-of-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disinformation Governance Board<\/a>\u201d to sift through speech?<\/p>\n<p>The left\u2019s claim to be defenders of \u201cdemocracy\u201d is highly risible. It also is often Orwellian. Take the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/29\/there-are-no-banned-books\/\">nonexistent<\/a> \u201cbook bans\u201d that MSNBC spends seemingly all day discussing. For the modern leftist, trapping kids and parents in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bill-barr-militantly-secularist-government-caused-public-school-disaster\/\" title=\"Bill Barr: 'Militantly Secularist Government' Caused Public School 'Disaster'\">state-run schools<\/a> and then authorizing unelected bureaucrats rather than parents deciding what children can see and learn is the embodiment of \u201cdemocracy.\u201d When constituents vote for politicians who curate those \u201cpublic\u201d school libraries by excluding books that feature illustrations of 11-year-olds <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/13\/if-banned-books-are-harmless-joe-biden-should-read-them-to-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">engaged<\/a> in oral sex, or that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/im-taking-the-drug-that-activists-want-to-give-to-children-with-gender-dysphoria\/\" title=\"I\u2019m Taking The Drug That Activists Want To Give To Children With Gender Dysphoria\">normalize gender dysphoria<\/a>, or that teach race-obsessed <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/1619-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pseudohistories<\/a>, they somehow become the fascists. When constituents complain to school boards, the Justice Department chills speech by <a href=\"https:\/\/nsjonline.com\/article\/2021\/12\/whistleblower-docs-show-use-of-fbi-counterterrorism-tactics-on-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">labeling<\/a> them domestic terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, I can\u2019t think of a single major Democratic Party initiative that doesn\u2019t involve some kind of compulsion \u2014 usually in the guise of some invented positive \u201cright\u201d or limitation on economic freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m not saying Joy Reid or Joe Biden is worse than Hitler or even Mussolini. I\u2019m saying that they, and those like them, are illiberal actors who are a far bigger threat to our constitutional republic than an imperfect Ron DeSantis.
