Wong Kim Ark<\/a>, where the defendant, born to Chinese parents residing in the U.S., went to visit his parents and was denied reentry to the U.S. on the grounds that he was not a citizen. The court ruled 6-2 that the defendant was a U.S. citizen, establishing that even children of non-citizens born in the U.S. are considered legal citizens.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis has made immigration a focus of his campaign and recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/no-excuses-desantis-rolls-out-plan-to-shut-down-illegal-immigration-during-border-visit\">unveiled a \u201cNo Excuses\u201d memo<\/a> obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/desantis-debuts-sweeping-border-plan-no-excuses-trump\">The Washington Examiner<\/a> to crack down on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/illegal-immigration\">illegal immigration<\/a> in light of the Biden Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/calls-for-biden-white-house-to-act-on-border-crisis-continue-to-grow\/\" title=\"Calls for Biden White House to act on border crisis continue to grow\">current border crisis<\/a>, and part of the candidate\u2019s plan includes pushing for an end to what he describes as a \u201cfailed policy\u201d: \u201cDeSantis will take action to end the idea that children born to illegal aliens are entitled to birthright citizenship,\u201d the memo reads, adding, \u201cDangling the prize of citizenship to the future offspring of illegal immigrants is a major driver of illegal migration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the press conference, DeSantis said that, as president, he would work to \u201cremove the incentives to come here illegally to begin with,\u201d among them \u201cbirthright citizenship,\u201d which he noted has been abused in its implementation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis idea that you can come across the border and two days later have a child, and somehow that\u2019s an American citizen \u2013 that was not the original intention of the 14th Amendment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump, who announced in late May that he would also seek to end automatic citizenship, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-vows-end-birthright-citizenship-children-immigrants-us-illegally-2023-05-30\/\">promised to restrict the policy<\/a> in 2018 but never followed through with an executive order to implement it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AGENDA47?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AGENDA47<\/a>: President Trump\u2019s plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-approving-99-of-illegals-seeking-title-42-exceptions\/\" title=\"Biden Admin Approving 99% of Illegals Seeking Title 42 Exceptions\">discourage illegal immigration<\/a> by ENDING automatic citizenship for the children of illegal aliens. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3iytgg45st\">pic.twitter.com\/3iytgg45st<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TrumpWarRoom\/status\/1663537082633953282?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 30, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019 announced proposal received criticism from Democrats, who hailed the proclamation as unconstitutional: Former Obama attorney Joyce Alene <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoyceWhiteVance\/status\/1673386725408645121\">tweeted<\/a>, \u201cDeSantis is, apparently, unfamiliar with the Constitution (Many of the measures he proposes, reflected in this article, aren\u2019t happening.
