(Photo by Zach Wilkinson-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OAN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/noah-herring\">Noah Herring<\/a><br \/>6:22 PM \u2013 Monday, June 26, 2023<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors in Idaho announced on Monday that they will seek the death penalty for Bryan Kohberger for murdering four University of Ohio students last November.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Kohberger, 28, was charged with felony burglary and four counts of first-degree murder over the killings of Ethan Chapin, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Kaylee Goncalves, 20.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe State gives this notice based on the fact that it has not identified or been provided with any mitigating circumstances sufficient to prohibit the triers of fact from considering all penalities authorized by the Idaho legislature including the possibility of a capital sentence,\u201d prosecutors wrote in a Monday court filing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsequently, considering all evidence currently known to the State, the State is compelled to file this notice of intent to seek the death penalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Latah County Prosecutor\u2019s Office filed the notice to seek the death penalty on Monday as the filing is required within 6 days of a defendant entering their plea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201caggravating circumstances\u201d in the case led prosecuting attorney Bill Thompson to wonder if the specifics of the case could warrant the death penalty.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe murder was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/idaho-prosecutors-push-death-penalty-for-bryan-kohberger\/\" title=\"Idaho prosecutors insist on death penalty for Bryan Kohberger.\">manifesting exceptional depravity<\/a>,\u201d Thompson wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thompson, a former criminology student, was silent when he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/grand-jury-indicts-bryan-kohberger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">indicted in May<\/a> after pleading not guilty.<\/p>\n<p>The students had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/idaho-prosecutors-push-death-penalty-for-bryan-kohlberger\/\" title=\"Idaho prosecutors seek death penalty for Bryan Kohlberger.\">stabbed multiple times inside<\/a> the girls\u2019 rented home sometime around 3 a.m. to 4 a.m., according to police. A knife sheath was found left on one of the victims beds, which had Kohberger\u2019s DNA on it and what served as incriminating evidence. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kristi Goncalves, Kaylee Goncalves\u2019 mother, said that she hopes Kohberger will \u201cbe put to death like an animal, like he is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A hearing for the defense\u2019s motion to compel discovery evidence is scheduled to take place at 4:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
