The justices abandoned their preparations to hear the case themselves and lifted a hold on a lower court\u2019s decision for a revamped redistricting plan. <\/p>\n<p>The decision by the Supreme Court follows a ruling earlier this month by the justices on Alabama\u2019s congressional maps, which upheld how courts have historically approached the redistricting provisions in the Voting Rights Act, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hollywood-celebrities-use-mlk-day-to-push-democrats-dead-on-arrival-voting-bills-no-celebration-without-legislation\/\" title=\"Hollywood Celebrities Use MLK Day to Push Democrats' Dead-on-Arrival Voting Bills: 'No Celebration Without Legislation'\">landmark civil rights law<\/a> that Black voters are using to challenge the Louisiana congressional plan.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling now reportedly enhances the chances of Democrats gaining a House seat in the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n<p>Although Black Americans make up about one-third of Louisiana\u2019s population, only one of the state\u2019s six congressional districts is majority-Black, the 2nd Congressional District, which has a 62% Black population and is represented by Democrat Congressman Troy Carter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today the Supreme Court was on the side of justice. Carter (@RepTroyCarter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepTroyCarter\/status\/1673419269080481792?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 26, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" async data-cmplz-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Louisiana Republicans had worked to override the veto which pushed the current map through by term-limited Democrat Governor John Bel Edwards, who claimed that the apportionment diminished the voting power of Black residents.<\/p>\n<p>The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans was preparing to reconsider the lower court ruling when the Supreme Court intervened in June 2022, halting the process until after the midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>According to FiveThirtyEight, that plan also had five Republican districts and one Democratic district.<\/p>\n<p>However, a redesigned congressional map may cause serious problems for Rep. Garret Graves (R-La.), one of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy\u2019s (R-Calif.) top allies who was essential in debt ceiling discussions with the White House. According to the Cook Political Report, his district, which includes much of Baton Rouge and its suburb areas, is being labeled a \u201ctoss-up\u201d in 2024.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Regarding the Alabama case, Chief Justice John Roberts took the lead and wrote for the court\u2019s 5-4 majority, saying that a voting district \u201cis not equally open \u2026 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-allows-louisiana-congressional-map-to-be-redrawn-to-add-majority-black-district\/\" title=\"Supreme Court permits redrawing of Louisiana congressional map to include majority-Black district.\">minority voters face \u2014 unlike<\/a> their majority peers \u2014 bloc voting along racial lines, arising against the backdrop of substantial racial discrimination within the State, that renders a minority vote unequal to a vote by a nonminority voter.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The high court also determined that Alabama\u2019s map \u201clikely\u201d met the three legal requirements, the minority group was \u201csufficiently large and [geographically] compact,\u201d \u201cpolitically cohesive,\u201d and the white majority \u201cvotes as a bloc to sufficiently\u2026 defeat the minority\u2019s preferred candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">See below for a statement from Gov.
