Hough, who was 16 at the time, claimed that Petty, then 15, forcibly assaulted and raped her at knifepoint. Hough immediately reported the crime to her adoptive mother after returning home from school.<\/p>\n<p>Petty denied the allegations, asserting that he and Hough were dating at the time. However, he was later convicted of attempted rape in the first degree, assault in the second degree, unlawful imprisonment in the second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon. After serving nearly four years in prison, he was released in January 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Minaj faced criticism from fans who questioned her decision to be in a relationship with a convicted sex offender. In response, she defended Petty, stating, &#8220;He was 15, she was 16&#8230; in a relationship.
