Bush was president, his brother Neil entered a consulting agreement with a semiconductor company managed, in part, by the son of Jiang Zemin, then general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and paramount leader of China.<\/p>\n<p>A significant difference in the Hunter Biden case is that it lands side-by-side with federal charges against former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5324396\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/06\/09\/id5324396-Trump-GettyImages-1250772689-e1680640456742-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<p>Hunter Biden\u2019s alleged crimes will be settled by a guilty plea to two misdemeanor counts of tax evasion resulting in probation, plus a weapons charge that could be dismissed through a diversion program.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Trump\u2014Joe Biden\u2019s 2020 political opponent and possible presidential nominee in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/analysis-the-tale-of-two-legal-fates-hunter-bidens-plea-deal-and-trumps-indictment\/\" title=\"Comparison: Hunter Biden's Plea Deal vs. Trump's Indictment\">2024\u2014faces 37 felony counts related<\/a> to the handling of classified documents.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the younger Biden\u2019s plea deal was announced barely a week after Trump was indicted in federal court only sharpens the contrast.<\/p>\n<p>Critics see these cases as clear evidence of a double standard in the American justice system. For those in power, misdeeds and even criminal offenses are glossed over by the authorities. At the same time, the system is wielded like a club to embarrass, harass, or even imprison those who oppose the powerful.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s defenders point out that the facts in each case and the seriousness of the alleged offenses are wildly different, and that the prosecutor offering the plea deal was appointed by Trump and retained in office by Biden to avoid even a hint of interference.<\/p>\n<p>No matter. The perception of a double standard could impact the 2024 presidential election and, experts say, will almost certainly spark further distrust in and possibly changes to the Department of Justice (DOJ) in the future.<\/p>\n<h2>Republicans Fired Up<\/h2>\n<p>Republican leaders responded immediately after the Hunter Biden plea agreement was announced on June 20 with the assertion that the deal proves the existence of a \u201ctwo-tiered system of justice\u201d in America, the kind usually seen only in notoriously corrupt countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, like tens of millions of Americans, am concerned \u2026 about a two-tiered system of justice, like one set of rules for Republicans and one set of rules for Democrats,\u201d former Vice President Mike Pence said in a televised interview on June 20.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA \u2018sweetheart\u2019 deal for Hunter [and Joe], as they continue their quest to \u2018get\u2019 Trump, Joe\u2019s political opponent. We are now a third-world country!\u201d Trump wrote in a June 20 social media post.<\/p>\n<p>Tulsi Gabbard, the former congresswoman from Hawaii who left the Democratic party in 2022, went further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery banana republic or dictatorship has a two-tiered justice system. The \u2018in-crowd,\u2019 like Hunter Biden, get a slap on the wrist while dictators use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/d-c-mayor-congress-must-open-a-probe-into-security-failures-at-u-s-capitol\/\" title=\"D.C. Mayor: Congress must open a probe into security failures at U.S. Capitol\">federal law enforcement<\/a> and government institutions as their own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hard-to-imagine-tulsi-gabbard-calls-mar-a-lago-raid-a-blatant-abuse-of-power\/\" title=\"\u2018Hard To Imagine\u2019: Tulsi Gabbard Calls Mar-A-Lago Raid A \u2018Blatant Abuse Of Power\u2019\">personal goon squad<\/a> to go after political opponents,\u201d Gabbard wrote on Twitter on June 21.<\/p>\n<p>That idea, accurate or not, is likely to animate Republican rhetoric for some time, analysts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republican candidates will likely have a field day with this development,\u201d government analyst and former Navy intelligence officer Matt Shoemaker told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4876524\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/11\/21\/former-vp-pence-in-vegas-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<p>Despite the sermonizing, the most likely impact of the Biden deal on the election is a fundraising windfall for Republicans, some experts say.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether the Hunter Biden plea deal would hurt the president\u2019s chances of re-election, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) was matter of fact: \u201cNo,\u201d he told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries turned the narrative around, saying that the Republican attempt to impeach Biden would likely backfire. \u201cAll it will do is highlight that they have no plan, no vision, no agenda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Diana Harshbarger (R-Tenn.), who is convinced the plea deal demonstrates a dual system of justice, is less certain that it will change minds. \u201cWell, you know, that\u2019s to be seen. I can\u2019t predict the future,\u201d she told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are absolutely no implications from the Hunter Biden plea deal on the 2024 presidential campaign because only MAGA Republicans actually care about Hunter or his crimes in the first place,\u201d political analyst Andrew Lieb told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats and independents are indifferent on the matter, he added. The real value of the plea deal is in fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly Republicans care about the plea deal, and it can therefore only be utilized as a talking point to rile their base and raise money,\u201d Lieb said.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Trump raised more than $6.6 million following his indictment on federal charges according to a June 14 campaign email to supporters.<\/p>\n<h2>Suspicions Confirmed<\/h2>\n<p>The more immediate effect of the plea agreement, juxtaposed with the Trump indictment, is that it tends to confirm the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/opinion-requiring-proof-of-vaccination-is-a-slippery-slope\/\" title=\"Opinion: Requiring Proof Of Vaccination Is A Slippery Slope\">widely held belief<\/a> that there really are two standards of justice in America.<\/p>\n<p>That perception exists across the political spectrum, according to Marie Eisenstein, a professor of political science at Indiana University specializing in social trust and its impact on elections.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3469006\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2020\/08\/20\/No-justice-1222737967-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is a perception in this country that we actually have a two-tiered justice system, and that the accepted orthodoxy\u2014no matter what the topic may be\u2014happens to be more left of center than right of center,\u201d Eisenstein told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then if you go against that, you\u2019re far more likely to be dealt with harshly politically, in the media, and possibly legally,\u201d Eisenstein said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe level of trust in this country is at an all-time low \u2026 We are less trusting of each other, we are less trusting of our government than we\u2019ve practically ever been.
