Extreme weather accounts for only <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/mortality-rates-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about<\/a> 0.1 death for every 100,000 people in the United States each year. The Post should be celebrating the fact that humans have never been less threatened by the climate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-765650895\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-89cba283456c9bfb2c4c68bbc1830122 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-89cba283456c9bfb2c4c68bbc1830122\"><\/div>\n<p>The Post warns that 30 million people in the U.S. may be \u201cexposed\u201d to dangerous heat \u201ctoday.\u201d That\u2019s a lot of people, even considering nearly all of them live in the southernmost spots in the country and it\u2019s the middle of the summer. The Post counts anyone exposed to heat over 90 degrees as being in some level of danger. Fortunately, most Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=52558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enjoy<\/a> the luxury and health benefits of air-conditioning, one of the great innovations of the past century.<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere in the piece, however, do the authors tell us exactly how many Americans have perished from the oppressive heat. Anyway, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ephtracking.cdc.gov\/Applications\/heatTracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around<\/a> 700 people a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention \u2014 if you liberally count heat as both the \u201cunderlying\u201d and\/or \u201ccontributing\u201d causes. It is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/69\/wr\/mm6924a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 400 people<\/a> when heat is the underlying cause. And that\u2019s terrible. But, also, it\u2019s around 3,600 fewer people than those who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drowning\/facts\/index.html\">drown<\/a> every year.<\/p>\n<p>Though there has been an uptick in recent years \u2014 as Bjorn Lomborg has pointed out, this is almost surely due to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-lancets-heat-death-deception-united-nations-cop-27-cold-study-population-growth-technology-energy-climate-11667580996\">aging<\/a> population that is more susceptible to heat \u2014 both numbers are still near-historic lows.<\/p>\n<p>And most of those deaths, despite the Post\u2019s claim, are from <em>the cold<\/em>, which is far more lethal. I come to this information via a Washington Post piece that ran this very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/interactive\/2023\/hot-cold-extreme-temperature-deaths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">winter<\/a>, which noted that for \u201cevery death linked to heat, nine are tied to cold.\u201d That piece relied on a peer-reviewed Lancet study. Another peer-reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2740#:~:text=Cold%20weather%20kills%20far%20more%20people%20than%20hot%20weather%2C%20study%20shows,-BMJ%202015%3B%20350&#038;text=Cold%20weather%20is%20associated%20with,million%20deaths%20in%2013%20countries.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> in The BMJ found that \u201ccold weather is associated with nearly 20 times more deaths than hot weather.\u201d Other studies have come to the same conclusion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a65064a7d92e1d4fc445de411a28e748 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a65064a7d92e1d4fc445de411a28e748\"><\/div>\n<p>So where did the Post get the idea that heat was the leading cause of weather deaths? After following a few hyperlinks, I land on a National Weather Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/phi\/heat?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chart<\/a> from 2019 that lists heat as the leading cause of extreme weather deaths. Where it gets these numbers is a mystery to me. And though I\u2019m sure they aren\u2019t concocted, they certainly seem to be an outlier.<\/p>\n<p>Not to worry. Even here we find promising news. Though the National Weather Service says the leading cause of weather deaths is heat, it also found that the average was 103 deaths per year over the preceding decade. That\u2019s hundreds of fewer deaths per year than the CDC reports. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-39834fa61eaab88ca2eef1418bdbcddb fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-39834fa61eaab88ca2eef1418bdbcddb\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cExtreme heat is deadlier in the US than any other weather hazard,\u201d claims a Washington Post article. However, this assertion is likely inaccurate.
