Ben Cline (R-Va.) and Rep. Laurel Lee (R-Fla.), who had both stepped out briefly, to return to the hearing room quickly because at that moment Democrats Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) out-numbered Rep. Nathaniel Moran, the Texas Republican temporarily chairing the hearing in Cline\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n<p>Cline\u2019s reentry to the hearing meant there would be a tie vote, so Ivey withdrew the motion and the hearing continued. Ivey later told The Epoch Times he did so \u201cin a spirit of cooperation.\u201d Even so, the motion produced a close call that almost shut down the GOP majority\u2019s latest effort to shine a spotlight on how President Joe Biden\u2019s appointees are throwing up endless bureaucratic obstacles to frustrate and avoid congressional and public accountability.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5349984\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/06\/22\/id5349984-06212023-DSC00549-Jim-Jordan-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Rep. (Madalina Vasiliu\/The Epoch Times)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<h3>Examining Agency Responsiveness to Subpoenas and Oversight Requests<\/h3>\n<p>Officially, the hearing, the third of its kind by the subcommittee in recent months, was called \u201cto examine agency responsiveness to subpoenas and oversight requests.\u201d But Swalwell, the ranking member on the panel, made clear in his opening statement that he and his Democratic colleagues contend that \u201cwhat this is really about is the client the law firm \u2018Insurrection LLC\u2019 chaired by [House Judiciary Committee Chairman] Jim Jordan represents and that is Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a firm with just one client, so we\u2019re here today because Donald Trump has been indicted, 37 counts for stealing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-have-arrested-prosecuted-and-raided-their-enemies-theres-only-one-way-to-make-them-stop\/\" title=\"Democrats Have Arrested, Prosecuted, And Raided Their Enemies. There\u2019s Only One Way To Make Them Stop\">sharing classified documents<\/a> and this hearing is an effort to defend him in the court of public opinion and to taint the jury in the case against him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swalwell was referring to the 37-count<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/biden-administration-starts-giving-evidence-to-trump-team-in-criminal-case_5349329.html\"> indictment<\/a> filed earlier this month by Special Counsel Jack Smith against the former president concerning his failure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-wants-team-trump-held-in-contempt-over-mar-a-lago-docs\/\" title=\"DOJ Wants Team Trump Held in Contempt Over Mar-a-Lago Docs\">return classified documents<\/a> as requested by officials at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/officials-laud-congressional-oversight-but-cant-promise-delivery-of-requested-documents\/\" title=\"Officials praise congressional oversight, but can't guarantee requested documents will be provided.\">indictment includes counts covering obstruction<\/a> of justice and other felonies that could send Trump to jail for as much as 25 years if he is convicted. Trump contends he is innocent because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/waffle-arizona-house-speaker-claims-they-cant-enforce-constitution-wont-commit-to-calling-legislative-hearing\/\" title=\"WAFFLE: Arizona House Speaker Claims They Can\u2019t Enforce Constitution, Won\u2019t Commit To Calling Legislative Hearing\">federal law<\/a> allows a chief executive to declassify any document, and he further argues the Department of Justice (DOJ) is charging him solely because he is the leading opponent of Biden\u2019s re-election effort.<\/p>\n<p>Swalwell compared the judiciary committee Republicans\u2019 efforts to those of the 2017 Cleveland Browns pro football team that lost all 16 of its games that season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m embarrassed for Chairman Jordan because we were promised that the crime of the century was coming from John Durham and then we learned that John Durham only took two cases to trial and he lost both of them,\u201d Swalwell said. And he displayed a photo of Rep.
