Authorities announced Thursday that they had found debris from the submersible and that the occupants are believed deceased.<\/p>\n<p>In its June 20 \u201cfact-check\u201d piece, entitled \u201cWas the Missing Titanic Submersible Using Satellites from Elon Musk\u2019s Company?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/snopes-gets-scathing-fact-check-learns-hard-way-not-mess-conservative-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snopes<\/a> claimed that the submersible that went missing \u201crelied\u201d on Starlink for communications.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOceanGate, the company behind the submersible that went missing in June 2023 on a Titanic wreckage exploration, relied on Elon Musk\u2019s Starlink satellites to provide communications during the expedition,\u201d the \u201cclaim\u201d segment read.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u201crating\u201d Snopes gave to the so<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-directs-his-secretary-of-state-to-investigate-facebook-for-alleged-election-interference\/\" title=\"DeSantis Directs His Secretary Of State To Investigate Facebook For \u2018Alleged Election Interference\u2019\">-called fact-check<\/a> was \u201cTrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can see that <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230620231830\/https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/titanic-submersible-elon-musks-satellites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">original post<\/a> on the internet site Wayback Machine, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/snopes-tries-to-pin-titanic-sub-disaster-on-elon-musk-but-a-basic-science-fact-makes-their-ruling-impossible\/\" title=\"Snopes blames Elon Musk for Titanic sub incident, but a scientific fact disproves their claim.\">archives past website postings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But hours later, the site made an about-face and gave the claim an \u201cunproven\u201d rating after Twitter\u2019s community notes took Snopes to school with actual scientific facts.<\/p>\n<p>Then, after more alterations to its post, the \u201cfact-check\u201d suddenly switched to a \u201cfalse\u201d rating.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/titanic-submersible-elon-musks-satellites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snopes page<\/a> reads as a \u201cfalse\u201d rating and features four updates telling readers that the story was \u201camended\u201d to \u201cadd details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cfalse\u201d rating suddenly showed up after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fact-checking-fact-checkers-snopes-exposes-left-wing-bias-sham-pro-aoc-fact-check\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snopes<\/a> got a community note on its own tweet about its false \u201cfact-check.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Starlink is a subsidiary of SpaceX, which Elon Musk runs. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0MORTIgqfJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/0MORTIgqfJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 snopes.com (@snopes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/snopes\/status\/1671360746670678018?\">June 21, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/twitter-slaps-biden-with-massive-fact-check-after-wh-tries-to-spread-lie-about-childrens-deaths\/\" title=\"Twitter fact-checks WH over false claims about children's deaths.\">community note read<\/a> that \u201cStarlink <a href=\"https:\/\/radionavlab.ae.utexas.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/starlink_structure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operates<\/a> in the 10.7 to 12.7 GHz band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then notes that it is scientifically and technically impossible for anyone to use Starlink underwater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cober.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Microwave-Technology-Cober-website-v08-23-17.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penetration depth<\/a> of 2.45GHz in water is <8cm and falls off with increasing frequency,\u201d the note reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, Starlink cannot be used to communicate with an underwater submarine,\u201d the note added.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/twitter-add-fact-check-video-biden-tell-viewers-not-fake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cfact-checking\u201d<\/a> site has had many problems before.
