(AP Photo\/Dmitry Serebryakov)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/noah-herring\">Noah Herring<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3>11:40 AM \u2013 Thursday, June 22, 2023<\/h3>\n<p>The Russian courts decided on Thursday to deny the appeal of a Wall Street Journal reporter who was detained on espionage charges, keeping him in detention until August. <\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Evan Gershkovich, the detained reporter, was arrested back in March and accused of \u201cacting on the instructions of the American side\u201d and collecting information about the Russian military.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The journalist arrived in Moscow city court wearing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ignored-by-the-media-elites-and-fbi-list-of-20-individuals-at-the-capitol-on-january-6th-all-appear-to-be-connected-to-antifa-or-far-left-groups\/\" title=\"IGNORED BY THE MEDIA ELITES AND FBI: List of 20 Individuals at the Capitol on January 6th - All Appear to be Connected to Antifa or Far Left Groups\">black t-shirt<\/a> and jeans, as he was placed in a glass box.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The United States declared that it was \u201cextremely disappointed\u201d in the decision. U.S. ambassador to Russia, Lynn Tracy, stated that the charges against Gershkovich are \u201cbaseless\u201d and called for his release.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cHe is an innocent journalist who was carrying out journalistic activities and has been wrongfully detained. Such hostage diplomacy is unacceptable and we call on the Russian Federation to release him, as well as Paul Whelan and other U.S. citizens who have been wrongfully detained and we call for that release to occur immediately,\u201d Tracy said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Whelan, a Canadian-born former United States Marine with U.S., British, Irish, and Canadian citizenship, was convicted in 2020 on charges similar to Gershkovich\u2019s. He is now serving 16 years in Russian prison.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cNevertheless today in the courtroom Evan continued to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/home-prices-see-annual-increase-of-19-1-in-september\/\" title=\"Home Prices See Annual Increase Of 19.1% In September\">show remarkable strength<\/a> and resilience in the face of these very difficult circumstances,\u201d Tracy said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>His pre-trial detention was set to expire on May 29<sup>th<\/sup>. An earlier request to be transferred to house arrest or be granted bail was denied in April. In May, a judge extended his pre-trial detention to August 30<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAlthough the outcome was expected, it is no less an outrage that his detention continues to be upheld. Evan has been wrongfully detained for more than 12 weeks for nothing more than doing his job as a journalist. We continue to demand his immediate release,\u201d according to a statement from the WSJ.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The parents of Gershkovich were present in the courtroom and stood next to the glass box that their son was placed in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Evans\u2019 sister, Danielle Gershkovich, reportedly found out the news while she was in Philadelphia. She said it was good to at least see her brother smiling, but that the ruling was still disappointing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always a little bit of hope when these things happen, but we understand we\u2019re in it for the long haul,\u201d Danielle Gershkovich said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>President Biden, who was in contact with Gershkovich\u2019s family in April, said that the detention was \u201ctotally illegal\u201d\u00a0without really providing any sort of resolution. <\/p>\n<p>State Department officials have claimed that the U.S. journalist was \u201cwrongfully detained,\u201d as the House of Representatives passed a resolution calling for the release of Gershkovich and Whelan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
