He\u2019s credited with building the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium into one of the nation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jungle-jack-hannas-family-reveals-he-has-advanced-alzheimers-real-hard-some-days\/\" title=\"'Jungle Jack' Hanna's family discloses his 'advanced' Alzheimer's battle: 'Tough days'\">preeminent zoo destinations<\/a>. And I\u2019m going to hang onto them for as long as I can,\u201d his wife of 54 years, Suzi Hanna, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/nation-world\/2023\/06\/21\/jack-hanna-illness-sick-alzheimers-columbus-zoo-david-letterman-animal-guy-good-morning-america\/70293207007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Columbus Dispatch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The couple shares three daughters, Kathaleen, Suzanne, and Julie. They say Hanna only remembers his wife and their dog, Brassy, plus sometimes can recognize his eldest daughter Kathaleen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe just stopped remembering who I was in all ways. Whether it was in person or by phone, he had no idea I was his daughter,\u201d Suzanne told the outlet. \u201cI think it\u2019s because he didn\u2019t see me as much because I got married so young and I moved away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy husband is still in there somewhere,\u201d Suzanne said of his condition. \u201cThere are still those sweet, tender moments \u2014 you know, pieces of him that made me and the rest of the world fall in love with him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hanna\u2019s wife said that taking care of Hanna is \u201creal hard some days, but he took care of me all those years, and so it\u2019s my turn to take care of him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One anchor of routine in Hanna\u2019s life is his daily two-mile walks with Suzanna. \u201cI want to hold on to these walks as long as I can,\u201d she told the outlet. \u201cI remember the day this all officially started. The day the doctor told us what it was. I\u2019ve just tried to hang on to the little pieces of Jack since then.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The zookeeper\u2019s family members also told The Columbus Dispatch why they decided to reveal details of their experience with Hanna\u2019s declining health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf this helps even one other family, it\u2019s more than worth sharing Dad\u2019s story,\u201d Kathaleen told the publication. \u201cHe spent a lifetime helping everyone he could. He will never know it or understand it, but he is still doing it now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe only retired due to the Alzheimer\u2019s,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was embarrassed by it. He lived in fear the public would find out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kathaleen is convinced her father \u201cwould have worked until the day he died\u201d if he could have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI just want it to be your dad and I for as long as I can,\u201d Suzanne said, addressing her daughters. \u201cThe river, the sun, Brassy, our walks.
