These snails, which can grow up to eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/homeless-woman-with-knife-interrupts-l-a-democrats-mayoral-campaign-launch\/\" title=\"Homeless Woman With Knife Interrupts L.A. Democrat\u2019s Mayoral Campaign Launch\">inches long<\/a>, pose a danger to agriculture, infrastructure, and even humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Quarantine Ordered to Combat the Threat<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier this month, the slugs were detected in Broward County&#8217;s Miramar community. In response, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/News-Events\/Press-Releases\/2023-Press-Releases\/Giant-African-Land-Snail-Quarantine-Established-in-Broward-County\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ordered<\/span><\/a> a quarantine to contain the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the department, these snails are considered &#8220;one of the most damaging snails in the world,&#8221; as they consume over 500 different types of plants. This poses a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/barcodes-bookbags-microsoft-teams-up-with-schools-to-create-covid-daily-pass-for-kids\/\" title=\"Barcodes &#038; Bookbags: Microsoft Teams Up With Schools To Create Covid \u2018Daily Pass\u2019 For Kids\">significant risk<\/a> to Florida&#8217;s $8 billion agriculture industry. These snails also carry a parasite called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/angiostrongylus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rat lungworm<\/span><\/a>, which can cause meningitis in humans. This disease can lead to severe complications such as paralysis, coma, or even death. Unfortunately, there is currently no treatment available for this type of meningitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To combat the problem, a quarantine order has been put in place, making it illegal to move the snails or any related materials within or from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-town-quarantined-to-eradicate-snails-from-hell\/\" title=\"Florida town under quarantine to eliminate invasive snail infestation.\">defined quarantine area<\/a> without a compliance agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The state&#8217;s Department of Agriculture is taking action to eradicate the snails by using snail bait and a safe pesticide for local plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The origin of these snails in Broward County remains unclear. However, authorities suspect that the worldwide spread of these snails is linked to the pet trade. It is possible that someone brought them to the U.S. as a pet, although importing giant African land snails without a permit is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/News-Events\/Press-Releases\/2023-Press-Releases\/Giant-African-Land-Snail-Quarantine-Established-in-Broward-County\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">illegal<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The last sighting of these snails in Florida was in 2022, north of Tampa, where over 1,000 were spotted.
