Wes Moore really wanted to create a mental image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI continue hearing people making the argument that we\u2019re [banning books] because we want to prevent our students from having discomfort or guilt,\u201d Moore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ll_ZTlStavA&#038;ab_channel=MSNBC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> MSNBC host Jen Psaki on Monday, regarding recent conservative efforts to keep lewd and ahistorical content from kids in public schools and libraries. \u201cBecause we don\u2019t want our students to be able to really wrestle with these really difficult things in times when they are maturing as individuals and difficult historical points. But the thing I realized and I wanted to speak out about is, that\u2019s actually not true. It\u2019s a guise.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t done. \u201cIt\u2019s not about making kids feel uncomfortable. It\u2019s about telling other kids that they shouldn\u2019t understand their own power. It\u2019s castrating them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Poor choice of words.<\/p>\n<p>Now, to be fair, Psaki teed up the \u201cbook ban\u201d conversation to focus on racial rather than sexual politics, saying \u201ca lot of the focus has been on African American history and literature.\u201d So Moore indulged, invoking his skin color to lend credibility to his policy opinions. Presumably, Psaki and Moore were referring to a Miami school district <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/fact-check-ron-desantis-on-amanda-gorman-poem-being-pulled-from-a-florida-elementary-school-library\/20887223\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moving<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/20\/the-uphill-climb-a-tribute-to-bidens-inaugural-year-and-the-poem-that-kicked-it-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poem written for Joe Biden\u2019s presidential inauguration<\/a> from the elementary section of the school library to the more appropriate middle-school section. Or to Gov. Ron DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/01\/23\/like-desantis-every-republican-lawmaker-should-block-college-boards-critical-race-theory-class\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blocking<\/a> College Board from implementing an experimental African-American studies curriculum, which leaked materials proved was actually a pricey Trojan horse for indoctrinating high schoolers with divisive critical race theory.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath the race-baiting, however, is the unavoidable reality that the books at the center of the \u201cbanning\u201d controversy have nothing to do with ancestry or melanin. The books conservative taxpayers are sniffing out on children\u2019s shelves at the schools and libraries they fund expose young people to masturbation, risky sexual behaviors, lasciviousness, same-sex experimentation, rape, violence, and more. They are wildly age-inappropriate at best, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/13\/if-banned-books-are-harmless-joe-biden-should-read-them-to-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pornographic at worst<\/a>. Actually, maybe the shocking porn illustrations \u2014 which include graphic depictions of gay 10-year-olds having oral sex \u2014 somehow aren\u2019t the worst part.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s because other books in question entice young people to question their very embodiment, introducing them to words like \u201cnon-binary,\u201d \u201cgender expansive,\u201d and \u201cgender fluid.\u201d They <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/31\/this-is-your-sign-to-catechize-your-kids-and-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">catechize<\/a> kids into pseudoscientific confusion, leading them to believe they might be born into the wrong body \u2014 sometimes based on nothing more than their favorite colors or toys or dress-up costumes. Or that if their secondary sex characteristics don\u2019t develop as fast as their friends\u2019, maybe they\u2019d be happier without those appendages altogether. Or that anyone who truly loves them will affirm what they say, no matter how delusional or sick. Or that it\u2019s fun and normal to play with pronouns and names and chemicals.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The dark root of all these deceptively colorful books is the same: They teach kids to hate their bodies.<\/p>\n<p>And so begins the school-to-scalpel pipeline, which starts with picture books but ends with real castration. If ideologues can convince young people that they\u2019d be happier as the opposite sex or that they\u2019d be better off delaying puberty so they can explore their \u201cidentity,\u201d they can create not only lucrative, lifelong medical patients but also reliable voters.<\/p>\n<p>So ignore the media narratives about \u201cbook bans.\u201d As Federalist Senior Editor David Harsanyi <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/29\/there-are-no-banned-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>, \u201cBooks are banned in Tennessee in the same way a person can\u2019t say the word \u2018gay\u2019 in Florida. It\u2019s a myth.\u201d Furthermore, widely available titles aren\u2019t \u201cbanned\u201d simply because some taxpayers are no longer required to bankroll them. Just because you can\u2019t pick up a copy of <strong>My Princess Boy<\/strong> during study hall doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t nab a copy at any Barnes and Noble or have Amazon ship it to your front door by tomorrow. None of these books are banned.<\/p>\n<p>But to the extent conservative leaders and parents have protected children from harmful propaganda, it isn\u2019t about metaphorically \u201ccastrating\u201d people with dark skin \u2014 which is absurd on its face. It\u2019s about saving kids from literal castration.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maryland Gov.
