He still feels he got the job done \u2014 and to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-people-speaking-out-after-reversing-their-transgender-therapy\/\" title=\"5 People Speaking Out After Reversing Their Transgender Therapy\">large extent<\/a>, the results speak for themselves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trumps-supreme-court-puts-end-cuomos-covid-crackdown-religious-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A conservative Supreme Court<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-commerce-secretary-claims-no-shred-of-evidence-that-trump-tax-cuts-increased-growth-and-productivity\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Commerce Secretary Claims No \u2018Shred Of Evidence\u2019 That Trump Tax Cuts \u2018Increased Growth And Productivity\u2019\">record low unemployment<\/a> before COVID lockdowns, inflation under control, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fox-news-presses-trump-on-former-admin-members-whove-turned-on-him-trump-hits-back-hard-10-to-1\/\" title=\"Fox News questions Trump about former administration members who have criticized him, and Trump responds aggressively, claiming the ratio is \"10 to 1.\"\">reconfigured trade agreements<\/a> are all a testament to Trump. Nothing is perfect, but anyone who thought America was entering an irrecoverable tailspin after the election which called for The Donald in 2016 was sorely mistaken.<\/p>\n<p>However, nobody will deny he broke a few Beltway eggs to make that omelette, and he broke them gladly. So, now that he\u2019s running again in 2024, who would be surprised that some of Trump\u2019s former hires don\u2019t hold a particularly favorable view of the guy \u2014 and, in some cases, are running against him?<\/p>\n<p>Fox News\u2019 Bret Baier is apparently surprised. Baier, who had a sit-down interview with the former president and 2024 GOP frontrunner that aired Monday, took issue with one of his quotes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-2016-ad-featuring-michael-moore-speech-goes-viral-made-perfect-case-president-45\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 presidential race<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m going to surround myself with only the best and most serious people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I did do that,\u201d Trump responded. \u201cThat\u2019s tremendous. Look, we had the best economy we\u2019ve ever had, the world has ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/texts-reveal-carlson-baier-really-felt-foxs-infamous-ariz-election-call-2020-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baier<\/a> was less impressed:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis time, your Vice President Mike Pence is running against you. Your ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, she\u2019s running against you. Your former secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said he\u2019s not supporting you,\u201d Baier said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mentioned National Security Advisor John Bolton. He\u2019s not supporting you either. You mentioned Attorney General Bill Barr \u2014 says you shouldn\u2019t be president again. Calls you \u2018the consummate narcissist\u2019 and \u2018troubled man.\u2019 You recently called Barr a \u2018gutless pig.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour second defense secretary is not supporting you \u2014 called you irresponsible. This week, you called your White House Chief of Staff John Kelly \u2018weak and ineffective\u2019 and \u2018born with a very small brain.\u2019 You called your acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney a \u2018born loser,\u2019\u201d Baier continued.<\/p>\n<p>Etc., etc.:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">LOL omg <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jwBAMvhLMl\">pic.twitter.com\/jwBAMvhLMl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Acyn (@Acyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Acyn\/status\/1670924265158324225?\">June 19, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSo why did you hire them?\u201d Baier asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hired 10 to 1 that were fantastic,\u201d Trump told Baier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a great economy. We had phenomenal people in charge of the economy. We had phenomenal people in the military. I\u2019m not a fan of Milley, and I\u2019m not a fan of certain of the television people, but I knocked out ISIS. I defeated ISIS. They said, \u2018Mattis, it would take three years, and I don\u2019t think we can do it.\u2019 I did it in a period of like four weeks,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t forget, for every one you say I had 10 that love us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If this is what counts as \u201cgotcha\u201d in Baier\u2019s world, he\u2019s going to have to try a little bit harder than that.<\/p>\n<p>Before the annus horribilis of 2020, the Trump administration functioned more or less as any other administration did, with both successes and failures. Yes \u2014 and more so, he did it with relish. His campaign chant was literally \u201cDrain the Swamp.\u201d For the most part, those figures had at least one foot dipped in said swamp \u2014 and they weren\u2019t about to take it out, lest they be left out of the power loop.<\/p>\n<p>If Baier thought he was going to embarrass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hypocrite-alvin-bragg-slammed-2-lawsuits-trump-indictment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> by confronting him with a list of professional Washingtonians, the Fox News anchor is apparently suffering from retrograde amnesia that began on Jan. 20, 2021. One hopes he seeks the medical help he requires posthaste.<\/p>\n<p>As for Trump, just because he is running against several of his former administration officials and because other top hires have opposed his run doesn\u2019t mean that he didn\u2019t surround himself \u201cwith only the best and most serious people.\u201d After all, an administration has thousands of employees, most of whom are anonymous, as far as the media is concerned.<\/p>\n<p>As for those at the top, sometimes \u2014 particularly if you\u2019re the pugnacious sort as a chief executive \u2014 you\u2019ll also have to fire the \u201cbest and most serious people,\u201d even if they have a high profile. Or, given how the media and how reputation in Washington works, it could have been in their best interest to leave on their own and distance themselves from Trump as a springboard to higher political ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, this has long been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/fixgov\/2020\/04\/13\/and-then-there-were-ten-with-85-turnover-across-president-trumps-a-team-who-remains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">liberal knock<\/a> on Trump: That somehow, employee turnover at the top is the judge of an administration\u2019s strength. Now, apparently, Fox News Light (the Bud Light of conservative media, at least at the moment) feels it\u2019s an accurate gauge of how a president is doing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not. Peace abroad, fiscal discipline and economic prosperity at home, and success in executing the White House\u2019s political agenda are the barometers by which we judge a president. Under Trump, Russia, China and North Korea were more or less under control. At least before the pandemic, economic growth was high and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-economy-sets-third-straight-month-record-black-unemployment-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unemployment<\/a> and inflation were low. On the judicial front, Trump is responsible for the Supreme Court that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-calmly-explained-destroy-roe-v-wade-six-years-ago-paying-attention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dealt a death blow<\/a> to Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has had the same Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense since he took office. Russia is now at war with Ukraine, and China sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-delegation-gets-bad-news-spy-balloon-meeting-chinese-officials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spy balloon<\/a> over the continental United States; this isn\u2019t even mentioning Beijing\u2019s designs on Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has had the same attorney general since he took office. The DOJ is now in the business of prosecuting the main political opposition for something not materially dissimilar from what the president himself did, something which usually happens in countries with leaders like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-hrw-calls-for-sanctions-on-nicaraguas-ortega\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Ortega<\/a>, Robert Mugabe or \u2014 dare we speak his name? \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/russian-dissident-navalny-biden-like-frightened-schoolboy-putin-pulls-wool-eyes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vladimir Putin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has had the same Secretary of the Treasury since he took office. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/white-house-post-graph-bragging-inflation-going-completely-blows-face\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inflation<\/a> still remains a millstone weighing upon every Middle American family \u2014 but hey, at least she hasn\u2019t quit or been fired, right?<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s had the same Secretary of Homeland Security since day one; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/chaos-confusion-nbc-host-tears-biden-border-chief-shreds-air-border-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the border crisis hasn\u2019t abated<\/a>. He has the same Secretary of Transportation since day one; no end in sight to supply-chain woes, but Mayor Pete is tearing down racist roads.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump appointees at the top of his administration had beef with the president and left, so none of the last administration\u2019s accomplishments count? Yeah, that\u2019s not <em>quite<\/em> how it works.<\/p>\n<p>When egos clash, sparks fly, but if it doesn\u2019t affect what gets done \u2014 or, even, leads to creative conflict \u2014 trying to make this into a negative for the former president doesn\u2019t fly, particularly when you compare his first two years with Biden\u2019s first two years.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure how accurate that \u201c10 to 1\u201d figure cited by the former president is \u2014 but the point is that his loyal base stayed and made things work, and work very well.<\/p>\n<p>Trump promised to surround himself \u201cwith only the best and most serious people.\u201d He shuffled them around not infrequently, sometimes parting on bitter terms. Biden has done no such reshuffle, even as a multitude of crises continue unabated.<\/p>\n<p>Are we supposed to commend the second president\u2019s approach while condemning the first\u2019s?
