It didn\u2019t require any effort \u2014 or talent, for that matter. Just some cheap equipment and the ability to haphazardly thwack it in a semi-rhythmic nature.<\/p>\n<p>In our thoroughly digital age, however, I think we\u2019ve switched over to the podcast.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong: Just as there are some very good bongo drummers, Phish concert or not, there are excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/charity-pot-balloons-1500-percent-still-not-enough-infamous-covid-doc-debate-rfk-jr-rogan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcasters<\/a>. However, as a form of art, it\u2019s ridiculously simple to do. You sit yourself in front of your computer, which already has a microphone. If you want to get fancy, buy yourself a better microphone.<\/p>\n<p>Then, if you can\u2019t think of anything to say, you find someone else to sit down in front of the computer, perhaps with their own microphone. You talk. It doesn\u2019t even have to be about anything entertaining. I\u2019ve listened to three-hour podcasts that could have been whittled down to a two-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/axios-tries-cover-bidens-weird-words-ends-making-situation-worse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axios<\/a> article.<\/p>\n<p>But even that was reportedly too difficult for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ouch-harry-meghans-20-million-media-deal-gets-axed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meghan, Duchess of Sussex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the streaming giant Spotify quietly announced that its deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-judge-not-pleased-prince-harry-defies-order-first-day-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prince Harry<\/a> and Meghan had come to an end, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/entertainment\/prince-harry-meghan-markles-spotify-deal-ends-season-1-archetypes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox Business News<\/a>. The couple\u2019s production company, Archewell Audio, had produced one series for the service, hosted by Meghan and titled \u201cArchetypes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the series lasted only 12 episodes, it won a People\u2019s Choice Award for best podcast. I can\u2019t tell you if it deserved it, because I have a limited number of hours upon this Earth allotted to me by my Creator and I literally have anything better to spend it with Markle and an author discussing when it\u2019s OK to use the word \u201cb****\u201d and whether using the word \u201cdifficult\u201d to describe a woman is the same as using the B-word. (This, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/19\/meghan-markle-faked-podcast-interviews-her-voice-added-later-sources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>, is precisely what one episode consisted of.)<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s that episode (among others) that\u2019s drawing attention to the work habits of the former Meghan Markle \u2014 because, apparently, she wasn\u2019t even there to ask the questions during these podcast interviews.<\/p>\n<p>According to industry outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/podnews.net\/update\/fkin-grifters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Podnews<\/a>, multiple sources say \u201cthat some interviews on the show were done by other staffers, with her questions edited-in afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Post noted:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeculation that Markle doesn\u2019t directly interview her guests started circulating when writer Allison Yarrow shared on Instagram in August that she was \u2018excited to be included in the visionary series.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet the post showed Yarrow posing in front of a sign for the audio production house Gimlet Media \u2014 and included thanks to an \u2018Archetypes\u2019 producer for being \u2018an excellent interviewer.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYarrow \u2014 author of \u201990s B****: Media, Culture, and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality\u2019 \u2014 appeared on the podcast in an episode titled \u2018To \u201cB\u201d or Not To \u201cB,\u2019\u201d\u00a0 in which the royal discussed how calling a woman \u2018difficult\u2019 is \u2018a code word for the B-word.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/grow-megyn-kelly-blasts-harry-meghans-near-catastrophic-paparazzi-chase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duchess of Sussex\u2019s<\/a> remarks were inserted and interwoven between Yarrow\u2019s remarks on the topic, the U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-11434463\/Is-Meghan-REALLY-speaking-guests-podcast-Journalist-thanked-producer-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a> reported in November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn clips from the show, the journalist\u2019s comments are edited between comments from Meghan herself,\u201d the Daily Mail stated.<\/p>\n<p>And while a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/amp\/articles\/meghan-markles-archetypes-podcast-at-spotify-wont-be-renewed-44311f4f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> report Thursday described \u201cArchetypes\u201d as a casualty of Spotify\u2019s \u201crevamped approach to podcasting,\u201d the outlet also noted Markle\u2019s podcast had fallen short of \u201cproductivity benchmarks\u201d necessary for Harry and Meghan to claim the full $20 million they were due from the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but other Spotify talent \u2014 as in, actual podcasters who take the medium seriously \u2014 have spoken out about the streaming company\u2019s deal with Harry and Meghan, most notably sports podcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/prince-harry-meghan-mocked-grifters-executive-spotify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Simmons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Simmons \u2014 an ESPN alum who\u2019s head of Spotify\u2019s global sports content \u2014 laid into the royal couple during a recent episode of \u201cThe Bill Simmons Podcast,\u201d briefly describing a Zoom call he had with the prince to discuss possible podcast ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018The F***ing Grifters.\u2019 That\u2019s the podcast we should have launched with them,\u201d Simmons said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/bill-simmons-calls-prince-harry-and-meghan-grifters-after-couples-spotify-deal-comes-to-abrupt-end\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox Sports<\/a>. \u201cI gotta get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It\u2019s one of my best stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nor is the animosity recent: Simmons said in January that he was \u201cso embarrassed\u201d to \u201cshare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/obamas-dumped-streaming-giant-spotify-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotify<\/a> with\u201d Prince Harry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShoot this guy to the sun. I\u2019m so tired of this guy,\u201d Simmons said. \u201cWhat does he bring to the table? He just whines about s*** and keeps giving interviews. \u2026 Who cares about your life? You weren\u2019t even the favorite son. \u2026 I can\u2019t stand him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Give Harry his due, though: From the sound of things, he might have been doing more at Spotify than his wife was. So untalented and entitled is the Duchess of Sussex she couldn\u2019t even really be bothered to put in the effort to fulfill a $20 million contract to do the 21st century version of playing the bongos.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the laziest way possible to do an interview is have one of your staffers do it for you.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, this is exactly what we\u2019ve come to expect from her. Why even be surprised at this point?
