We cannot draw any other conclusion from the egregious, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-best-interests-of-children-have-often-come-dead-last-watch-mcconnell-tear-into-teachers-unions\/\" title=\"\u2018The Best Interests Of Children Have Often Come Dead Last\u2019: Watch McConnell Tear Into Teachers\u2019 Unions\">full-court press<\/a> against homeschooling and classical education from corporate media and national public school organizations. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet as much as the increasing number of bitter hit pieces and \u201creports\u201d unfairly malign and misrepresent both homeschoolers and classical schools, the phenomenon also evinces something hopeful. The overtaking of American public education by racial and sexual ideologues has tremendously backfired. For those parents who have sought more say over their children\u2019s education, the message is clear: We\u2019re winning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1750598862\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d01d2b2bef430f470579224d9b3a792e fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d01d2b2bef430f470579224d9b3a792e\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Aggressive Campaign<\/h2>\n<p>Corporate media and various pro-public education organizations have for some time been increasing their rhetoric against homeschooling and classical education. Conservative media, including <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/06\/washington-posts-homeschooling-smears-wont-stanch-public-school-hemorrhage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Federalist<\/a>, have recently documented The Washington Post\u2019s smear campaign against homeschooling, which not so subtly hinted that homeschooling parents engage in child abuse. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is little to no regulation of home schooling in much of the country, with no guarantees that kids are learning skills and subjects to prepare them for adulthood \u2014 or, for that matter, learning anything at all,\u201d the paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/interactive\/2023\/christian-home-schoolers-revolt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ominously warned<\/a> in its first of several long pieces on home-schooling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But The Washington Post\u2019s reporting is just the tip of the iceberg. Salon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2023\/06\/10\/duggar-homeschooling-danger-reform-shiny-happy-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ran a story<\/a> on June 10 warning that the deregulation of homeschooling will damage an entire generation of children. \u201cChildren in homeschooling environments are uniquely vulnerable to isolation, abuse and humiliation at the hands of their caregivers,\u201d the author claimed, with no actual hard evidence. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Elizabeth Bartholet of Harvard University told PBS that kids who go to a school outside the home are protected from abuse and neglect because the largest group of reporters for many years now has been teachers and other school personnel.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ee646787c258dfd6e451938b7319bb2d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ee646787c258dfd6e451938b7319bb2d\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHow the conservative Christian right is hijacking homeschooling,\u201d read a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/schools-are-under-attack-america-s-religious-right-n1295340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">May headline from MSNBC<\/a>. CNN earlier this year <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/02\/us\/ohio-investigating-white-supremacist-homeschooling-network\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> on a \u201cwhite supremacist homeschooling network that shares Nazi-related resources.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Classical education is also under assault. As The Federalist\u2019s Joy Pullmann <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/12\/extremist-left-claims-only-nazis-want-to-teach-children-grammar-and-patriotism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently noted<\/a>, The Washington Post on June 8 positively covered a \u201creport\u201d \u2014 funded by the Network for Public Education, which receives funding from public school teachers unions \u2014 claiming schools that use a classics-based curriculum are vanguards of \u201cright-wing Christian nationalism.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The New Republic in March 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/165868\/tennessee-classical-education-charter-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> conservatives\u2019 embrace of classical education \u201calarming,\u201d and claimed that \u201creligious charter schools are plainly a threat to pluralistic society.\u201d\u00a0Michael Harriot \u2014 a columnist for The Grio and guest on MSNBC programs \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/20\/clueless-classical-ed-critics-accidentally-make-a-killer-case-for-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently claimed<\/a> classical education is racist because it teaches \u201cwhite things,\u201d whatever those are.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Threat to the Education Complex\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>It is unsurprising that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mary-vought-another-parents-rights-win-in-virginia\/\" title=\"Mary Vought: Another Parents Rights Win in Virginia\">education-industrial complex<\/a> would set its sights on homeschooling and classical education. Since the beginning of the 2019 school year, homeschooling enrollment in the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/how-homeschoolings-rise-during-the-pandemic-has-impacted-traditional-school-enrollment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has increased by an estimated 30 percent<\/a>. Public schools across the nation have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-02\/Where%20the%20Kids%20Went-%20Nonpublic%20Schooling%20and%20Demographic%20Change%20during%20the%20Pandemic%20Exodus%20from%20Public%20Schools_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost about 1.2 million students since 2020<\/a>. In my home state of Virginia, homeschoolers now account for almost 60,000 students, which makes homeschooling the fifth largest school district in the commonwealth, as homeschooling advocate Derrick A. Max <a href=\"https:\/\/theroanokestar.com\/2023\/06\/12\/the-washington-post-attacks-the-most-successful-education-reform-in-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently observed<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a937260cfe25f11e0e8239c664c396b1 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a937260cfe25f11e0e8239c664c396b1\"><\/div>\n<p>There has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/networkforpubliceducation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sharp-Turn-Right-FINAL-6.6.23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar spike for classical education<\/a>: Since 2016, the number of classical and conservative charter schools has grown by 90 percent. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cltexam.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Classical Learning Test<\/a>, or CLT, created by my friend Jeremey Tate, has become a popular replacement for the SAT and ACT. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Commensurate with this shift has been a willingness from state governments to support these alternative education models. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2023\/03\/29\/state-funding-for-homeschooling-is-on-the-rise-not-everyone-wants-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As of March<\/a>, at least 12 states have laws on the books that provide funding for home-education expenses, and several others are considering legislation. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, this engenders fear among public educators. Between 2020 and 2021, state funding for higher education declined in 37 states by an average of 6 percent, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/advocating-for-change\/new-from-nea\/state-funding-higher-education-still-lagging#:~:text=Between%202020%20and%202021%2C%20state,was%20cut%20by%2047%20percent.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Education Association<\/a>, America\u2019s largest union.<\/p>\n<p>And why not? According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nheri.org\/research-facts-on-homeschooling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI)<\/a>, homeschoolers \u201ctypically score 15 to 25 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests.\u201d The NHERI also reports that 78 percent of peer-reviewed studies on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/heres-how-we-know-the-flunking-education-establishment-is-scared\/\" title=\"The scared education establishment: Here's how we know.\">academic achievement show homeschooled students statistically perform significantly<\/a> better than those in institutional schools. Research <a href=\"https:\/\/thehabershamschool.org\/making-a-difference-part-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conducted by the sociology department at the University of Notre Dame<\/a> indicates that classically educated students have better academic preparation, outlooks on life, and independent thinking than students in public schools. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growth of Education Alternatives<\/h2>\n<p>As more data becomes available for the American public to evaluate alternative models of education, we will see more scaremongering and spitefulness from the education-industrial complex. And, as recent corporate media slandering suggests, that scaremongering will almost certainly be defined by anti-Christian and anti-conservative messaging, reminiscent of the late 19th-century anti-Roman Catholic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blaine_Amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blaine Amendment<\/a> movement. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That political program, which enjoyed support in many states, sought to curb the growth of Roman Catholic parochial schools in America, even though public schools at the time were quite explicitly Protestant. Only three years ago, the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/supreme-court-says-montana-program-aiding-private-schools-must-be-open-to-religious-schools\/2020\/06\/30\/4d0af7e6-bad7-11ea-bdaf-a129f921026f_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> that Montana\u2019s Blaine Amendment had been prejudicially used against a (non-Catholic) religious school, in violation of the free exercise clause.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though attacks against homeschooling and classical education will intensify in the coming years, these education alternatives will keep growing. Parents want control over their children\u2019s education, especially when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/mcauliffe-saying-parents-shouldnt-tell-schools-what-teach-big-factor-election-poll-1649488#:~:text=Unconventional-,McAuliffe%20Saying%20Parents%20Shouldn't%20Tell%20Schools%20What%20to,Big%20Factor%20in%20Election%3A%20Poll&#038;text=Terry%20McAuliffe%20saying%20that%20parents,according%20to%20a%20new%20poll.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">politicians<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/03\/24\/dems-say-parents-dont-have-the-right-to-raise-their-own-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> educators<\/a> explicitly assert that their authority supersedes that of parents. <\/p>\n<p>Parents know better than to believe the ridiculous rhetoric that students are safer in schools than they are at home. Even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/advocating-for-change\/new-from-nea\/sexual-violence-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NEA admits<\/a> that incidents of sexual violence in public schools <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2020\/10\/15\/sexual-assault-k-12-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased by about 50 percent between 2015 and 2018<\/a>. And kids are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/k12\/articles\/bullying-in-private-schools-versus-public-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more likely to be bullied<\/a> in public schools than in private ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Homeschooling and classical education schools aren\u2019t hotbeds of racial, sexual, or political ideology that threaten the minds and bodies of our nation\u2019s young people. That description, unfortunately, is far more likely to be true of America\u2019s public schools. Until the education-industrial complex understands that, expect attrition rates from public schools to continue apace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-34997f9a09ba2932ead0cd8604bc673a fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-34997f9a09ba2932ead0cd8604bc673a\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>of homeschooling and classical education continues to grow. Despite the opposition, more and more families are choosing these alternative forms of education, recognizing their benefits and rejecting the traditional system.
