Trump says he never ordered the plan.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting occurred on July 21, 2021, approximately six months after Trump\u2019s presidency ended, at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The meeting involved a writer, publisher, and two aides of the former president, and centered around a forthcoming book authored by Mark Meadows, Trump\u2019s former chief of staff.<\/p>\n<p>In his first post-indictment interview, Trump\u2014who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/reports-house-speaker-pelosis-laptop-missing-w-va-delegate-charged-for-his-role-in-capitol-breach\/\" title=\"Reports: House Speaker Pelosi\u2019s laptop missing &#038; W. Va. delegate charged for his role in Capitol breach\">facing federal charges<\/a> concerning his handling of classified documents\u2014defended his actions. This issue is among the many legal challenges Trump currently faces as he campaigns for another term as president in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>A recent indictment accusing him of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-says-secret-document-he-described-on-tape-referred-to-news-clippings\/\" title=\"Trump claims tape referred to news clippings\">unlawfully retaining 31 sensitive government documents includes<\/a> a partial transcript of the audio recording in which Trump referred to a document with those present at the July 2021 meeting that he described as \u201csecret\u201d and classified.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the charges made in the indictment, Trump insisted during Monday\u2019s Fox News interview, \u201cThere was no document. That was a massive amount of papers and everything else talking about Iran and other things. And it may have been held up or may not, but that was not a document. I didn\u2019t have a document, per se. There was nothing to declassify. These were newspaper stories, magazine stories, and articles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s alleged July 2021 remarks were in response to media reports, including articles published by The New Yorker, which alleged that Milley had concerns about Trump potentially initiating a coup in the United States to prevent the transfer of power after he lost the election or attacking Iran. At the time, tensions between Trump and Milley were high.<\/p>\n<p>Trump emphasized during the Fox News interview that no document was present during the meeting, dismissing witness testimony to the contrary as dishonest.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018I Never Ordered That\u2019<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/read-indictment-against-former-president-donald-trump_5324048.html\">indictment<\/a>, at the meeting, Trump stated that he found Milley\u2019s \u201cplan of attack.\u201d He denied ordering Milley to create such a plan, claiming it was a misconception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never ordered that to happen, no,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/trump-calls-nara-radical-left-group-couldve-stuffed-boxes-during-mar-a-lago-document-raid\">told<\/a> Fox.<\/p>\n<p>Media outlets, including CNN, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-navy-assisting-israeli-oil-tanker-attacked-off-coast-of-oman\/\" title=\"U.S. Navy assisting Israeli oil tanker attacked off coast of Oman\">cited unnamed sources<\/a> who told the outlet that Trump briefly ruffled some papers, saying that he could not show them as proof of Milley\u2019s intent to attack Iran due to their classified nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, with [the Senior Military Official]\u2014uh, let me see that, I\u2019ll show you an example,\u201d Trump said, according to the indictment.<\/p>\n<p>The media reports identified the \u201cSenior Military Official\u201d as Milley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said that I wanted to attack [Iran]. Isn\u2019t it amazing?\u201d Trump said. \u201cI have a big pile of papers, this thing just came up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook. This was him. They presented me this\u2014this is off the record, but\u2014they presented me this. This was him. This was the Defense Department and him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump went on to say, without verbally referring to any document in particular, that, \u201cThis totally wins my case, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcept it is like, highly confidential,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d a staffer says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecret. This is secret information,\u201d Trump says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was done by the military and given to me,\u201d Trump says later in the exchange, before asking a question that is answered by a staffer: \u201cUh, I think we can probably, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know, we\u2019ll, we\u2019ll have to see. Yeah, we\u2019ll have to try to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeclassify it,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2014figure out a\u2014yeah,\u201d the staffer continues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee, as president, I could have declassified it,\u201d Trump said, referring to the information he was aware of. It remains unverified whether Trump has holding the classified documents or news clippings about the content of the classified documents in his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d says a staffer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I can\u2019t, you know, but this is still a secret,\u201d Trump says.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment argued that the writer, publisher, and two aides present at the meeting did not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-oversight-committee-chairman-calls-for-release-of-visitor-logs-from-bidens-delaware-residence\/\" title=\"GOP Oversight Committee Chairman Calls For Release Of Visitor Logs From Biden\u2019s Delaware Residence\">possess security clearances<\/a> or a legitimate need for classified information concerning an attack plan on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>During the interview, Fox News\u2019 Brett Baier questioned Trump about his use of the term \u201csecret\u201d to describe the document, suggesting that it contradicted his previous claims of having declassified all relevant materials. Trump clarified that his statement referred to his lack of authority to declassify documents after leaving the presidency, and that the nature of the source materials related to what he held on hand was secret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I said, that I couldn\u2019t declassify now, that\u2019s because I wasn\u2019t president,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI\u2019d never made any bones about that.
