After murdering his victims, Owens raped their corpses.<\/p>\n<p>Owen had a history of trying to leverage the legal system to avoid execution. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/aclu-complains-florida-didnt-give-murderous-rapist-gender-affirming-care-before-execution\/\" title=\"ACLU criticizes Florida for denying gender-affirming care to rapist-murderer prior to execution.\">murderer initially pleaded insanity<\/a>, but the state rejected his claim. Psychiatrists testified that Owen\u2019s purported schizophrenia was an &#8220;act.&#8221; When evaluated for dementia and gender dysphoria, illnesses Owen later claimed to have to avoid being executed, psychiatrists found no issues with his memory and said he didn\u2019t show any signs of trying to present as a woman.<\/p>\n<p>In response to Owen\u2019s Friday execution, the ACLU called on Florida to &#8220;end the racist, unfair and cruel death penalty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Christina Pushaw, a member of Ron DeSantis&#8217;s (R., Fla.) communications team, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChristinaPushaw\/status\/1669876741777629184\">pointed out<\/a> that Owen &#8220;wanted to be housed in a women\u2019s prison&#8221; likely &#8220;because as a violent rapist he wanted to be around more potential victims in a captive space.&#8221; Pushaw\u2019s tweet garnered more than five times as many likes as the ACLU\u2019s at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/defend-scotus-ads-beacon?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=beaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023maybeaconscotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/defend-scotus-ads-beacon?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=beaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023maybeaconscotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The organization was also served with a Twitter &#8220;Community Notes&#8221; fact check providing context about the nature of Owen\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU has previously downplayed the severity of crimes committed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/merrick-garland-has-a-lot-of-thinking-to-do\/\" title=\"Merrick Garland Has a Lot Of Thinking To Do\">death row inmates<\/a>.
