However, he reiterated America&#8217;s commitment to ensuring that Taiwan has the ability to defend itself. In September 2022, he stated that the United States would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, which angered China. Similar comments were made in 2021, but the White House later walked back those remarks.<\/p>\n<p>The remarks made by Blinken during his trip come at a time of escalating tensions between the United States and China. The Pentagon&#8217;s war games have indicated that the U.S. is unprepared for a potential conflict with China, described as a &#8220;horrifically bloody&#8221; war. Additionally, there have been reports of close encounters between the U.S. military and Chinese ships and planes.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, refusing to yield to China&#8217;s pressure to cancel the meeting.
