The meeting marked the first time a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-took-biden-so-long-to-sign-the-formula-act\/\" title=\"What Took Biden So Long to Sign the Formula Act?\">cabinet level official<\/a> had visited China since 2019, before the start of the COVID pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/anthony-blinken-china-trip-high-stakes-diplomatic-talks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the meeting on Sunday lasted for five and a half hours and was followed by a two hour working dinner. U.S. officials hoped to use the talks to reestablish senior level communications, \u201cexpress candid views\u201d and explore \u201careas of potential cooperation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ve made progress on all three of those goals \u2026 we covered almost the entire waterfront of the relationship,\u201d they said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier talks in February were canceled after the incursion of a Chinese spy balloon into U.S. airspace \u2013 said balloon crossed the continental United States and passed over several military installations before finally being downed off the coast of South Carolina on February 4. That provocation, combined with years of trade wars, increased tensions in the South China Sea and the Taiwanese strait, and an increasing body of evidence that suggests the COVID-19 pandemic began in a Chinese government lab have all contributed to Sino-American relations being \u201cat the lowest point\u201d they\u2019ve ever been, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-china-relations-blinken-afb39654e07ff1022bf8a3bf8296c686\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">according to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the Chinese Foreign Ministry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-blinkens-meeting-with-peoples-republic-of-china-state-councilor-and-foreign-minister-qin-gang\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the State Department, during the meeting Blinken \u201cemphasized the importance of diplomacy and maintaining open channels of communication across the full range of issues to reduce the risk of misperception and miscalculation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The exact details of the talks are not known, but it was widely expected that the two diplomats would discuss the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the export of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fentanyl-mexico-china-united-states-46fade6f948b46ac43299aab272699d7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chinese fentanyl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> into the US, and trade disputes, amongst other things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For their part, Foreign Minister Gang <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-65941659\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that Taiwan was the \u201cmost prominent risk\u201d for U.S.-China relations, and he also described the island as one of \u201cChina\u2019s core interests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The People\u2019s Republic of China claims Taiwan as an integral part of its territory but the island has been effectively independent since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Since then, the island has established itself as an economic and technological powerhouse, and it is currently the world\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/special-report\/2023\/03\/06\/taiwans-dominance-of-the-chip-industry-makes-it-more-important\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">premier manufacturing center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for advanced semiconductors, which are crucial components in both civilian and military hardware. Taiwan currently produces about 60% of the world\u2019s semiconductor chips and roughly 90% of cutting edge chips. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The US has attempted to reduce its dependence on Taiwanese chips by promoting domestic semiconductor production, but for the foreseeable future Taiwan remains a vital supply of a resource used in all advanced computers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Furthermore, the U.S. has maintained a strong de facto alliance with Taiwan dating back to before the end of the Second World War \u2013 back when its government controlled all of China under Chiang Kai Shek. The U.S. recognized the nationalist government in Taiwan as the legitimate government of all of China until 1979, when the U.S. and Communist China established diplomatic relations. Since then, the U.S. has retained a policy \u00a0of \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/blog\/2023\/01\/strategic-ambiguity-may-have-us-and-taiwan-trapped.html\">strategic ambiguity<\/a>\u201d the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0question of Taiwan, theoretically acknowledging it as a territory of China while informally recognizing its independence, sending Taiwan military hardware and heavily suggesting, although never confirming, that it will intervene militarily if China ever attempted to invade the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">China has been increasingly aggressive with both naval and aerial incursions into Taiwanese territory in recent months, and some observers, such as former National Security Advisor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/u-s-relationship-with-china-worse-than-with-soviet-union-during-cold-war-former-national-security-adviser-says\">H.R. McMaster<\/a>, \u201cmay portray a bit of weakness,\u201d in the face of Chinese aggression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, China has refused to respond to U.S. overtures for months, and potentially has its own reasons to come to the negotiating table. The Chinese economy is deteriorating: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/06\/15\/1182377255\/the-unemployment-for-young-people-in-china-hits-a-record-high-in-may\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">youth unemployment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has reached historically high levels, the Chinese <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/31\/new-warning-signs-emerge-for-chinas-property-market.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">housing market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is increasingly unstable, and the country has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/chinas-factory-output-consumption-highlight-slack-post-covid-economic-momentum-2023-05-16\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">yet to fully recover<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from its draconian COVID-19 lockdowns. Furthermore, its aging and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-cheers-candid-talks-with-china-after-months-of-rising-tensions\/\" title=\"U.S. celebrates positive talks with China amid escalating tensions.\">shrinking population pose long term structural economic problems<\/a>. Stabilizing trade with America and its allies could buttress the economic growth which has long been a source of stability and political legitimacy for the ruling regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talks will continue Monday and Blinken has expressed hopes that he will be able to personally meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming months.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>months-long period of strained relations.
