Sonora Smart Dodd founded the \u201cFather\u2019s Day\u201d holiday in her hometown of Spokane, Washington, in 1910. As a result, Dodd is the one to thank for those annual gifts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-woman-who-founded-fathers-day-sonora-smart-dodd\/\" title=\"Sonora Smart Dodd: Founder of Father's Day.\">dad-focused celebrations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Dodd started the custom and got the idea in the first place while sitting in a Spokane church on Mother\u2019s Day in 1909, listening to a sermon about mothers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAnd it bugged her,\u201d Dodd\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-hispanic-voters-in-florida-who-fled-dictatorships-think-the-election-was-stolen-from-trump\/\" title=\"REPORT: Hispanic Voters In Florida Who Fled Dictatorships Think The Election Was Stolen From Trump\">great-granddaughter<\/a>, Betsy Roddy, told The Associated Press. \u201cShe thought, \u2019Well, why isn\u2019t there a Father\u2019s Day?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dodd and her five younger brothers had been raised solely by their father, since their mother had died during childbirth back in 1898.<\/p>\n<p>Her father, William Jackson Smart, went into farming after serving\u00a0in the Civil War. He not only handled both parenting responsibilities, but he did it with <b>leadership and love<\/b>, as Dodd frequently said, and she believed that her father deserved more credit.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cSo she worked tirelessly with the local clergy and got the YWCA on board, and they had their first Father\u2019s Day in Spokane in 1910,\u201d said Roddy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Although the report projected that the holiday would be celebrated countrywide by the next year, Father\u2019s Day was slow to catch on. So much so that Dodd spent the next 62 years pleading for support from notable figures to everyday people like presidents and local shopkeepers.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, 37<sup>th<\/sup> President Richard Nixon designated the third Sunday in June a federal holiday honoring all fathers in 1972. Dodd, who died in 1978 at the age of 96, had lived to see her wish come true.<\/p>\n<p>The matriarch of Father\u2019s Day was a Renaissance lady who was a painter, poet, and hard-working entrepreneur who ran a funeral home with her husband while raising one son.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI take a great deal of pride in that renegade spirit that she clearly had,\u201d said Roddy. \u201cIt\u2019s time for me to pick up the baton and carry it proudly,\u201d she says with a smile. \u201cI\u2019m the last direct descendant.
