The outlet gave the F-150 Lightning Lariat, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-documents-suggest-democrats-sicced-the-cia-on-their-domestic-enemy-the-president\/\" title=\"New Documents Suggest Democrats Sicced The CIA On Their Domestic Enemy, The President\">high-end version<\/a> of the vehicle, its award for Truck of the Year in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the magazine has made some mistakes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/news\/car-of-the-year-winners-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the award<\/a> before. For instance, the ugly (and not terribly reliable) Chrysler PT Cruiser won the 2001 Car of the Year. So did the Chevrolet Vega in 1971; it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/solomon-another-tesla-spontaneously-combusts-musks-company-critical-lessons-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ford Pinto<\/a> rival that somehow racked up a worse quality record, so bad the cars would often begin rusting before they left the dealer lot and the engine would, if the car could be driven long enough to not collapse in a pile of ferrous oxide, begin to melt due to a cylinder distortion problem. At least they owned it.)<\/p>\n<p>While there were no melting parts on the F-150 Lightning and it wasn\u2019t a rust-bucket, in a Tuesday report, MotorTrend reporter Frank Markus said the staff was \u201calready off to a starkly different experience with our new Michigan-based Lightning,\u201d and not in a good way.<\/p>\n<h3>Range Anxiety: The F-150 Lightning&#8217;s First Test<\/h3>\n<p>Markus said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-edmunds-admits-3-big-problems-towing-electric-pickup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pickup\u2019s<\/a> first task \u2014 which should have been an easy one \u2014 ended problematically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis F-150 Lightning awaited us at the airport on a late March evening following a winter vacation in the tropics, but it warmed us quickly. The next morning, battery topped off at home with the cabin preconditioned, the range meter predicted 315 miles \u2014 way more than enough for a 130-mile drive north to retrieve our pooch from Grandma\u2019s house,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe drove with traffic at the prevailing Michigan speed (10 mph over the 70-mph limit) and arrived with less than 120 miles of range remaining \u2014 nowhere near enough to get home. Grandma\u2019s house lacks a charger, and her town of Midland boasts just four \u2014 all of them 6.5-kW Level 2 chargers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/state-bill-trash-free-ev-chargers-unless-government-can-something-huge-gas-diesel-drivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Level 2 chargers<\/a> are the kind often installed in the homes of EV owners, not the type you would normally see at a Tesla Supercharger station, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/news.energysage.com\/tesla-supercharger-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">classified<\/a> as Level 3 and charge much faster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked ourselves into a perch dinner in nearby Bay City to avail ourselves of an Electrify America station boasting four 350-kW chargers, one of which got us from 31 to 67 percent charge (199 miles) in 24 minutes at a peak charging rate of 155 kW (though we\u2019ve observed as high as 182 kW in our SoCal truck),\u201d Markus continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurely that\u2019s plenty? Nope. Driving 10 over the 75-mph limit on US-10 for the 15 miles back to grandma\u2019s consumed 49 miles of indicated range. Our attempt to creep home at 70 mph, traffic streaking by on the left, failed, forcing a stop at a 125-kW ChargePoint station curiously located inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ford-electric-truck-earns-rangeliar-nickname-after-road-trip-disaster-asking-for-my-money-back\/\" title=\"Ford's electric truck dubbed 'RangeLiar' due to a disastrous road trip, leaving customers demanding refunds.\">short-term parking lot<\/a> at the Flint airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Markus said the charger \u201chaltingly dispensed 20 miles of range in 10 minutes before faulting out, forcing us to complete the 58-mile run at 65 mph, arriving on electronic \u2018fumes.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad I just purchased this $85,779 truck, I\u2019d be asking for my money back,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Can\u2019t it just tell the freaking truth? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dHbeT9uEl2\">https:\/\/t.co\/dHbeT9uEl2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 motortrend (@MotorTrend) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MotorTrend\/status\/1666083038286213124?\">June 6, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Range Issues and the Future of EVs<\/h3>\n<p>Add that to the fact that a gas-powered F-150 would have easily completed the trip on just one tank of gas, according to federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/feg\/PowerSearch.do?action=noform&#038;path=1&#038;year1=2023&#038;year2=2023&#038;make=Ford&#038;baseModel=F150&#038;srchtyp=ymm&#038;pageno=1&#038;rowLimit=50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel economy average numbers<\/a>, and it\u2019s yet another sign that EVs might not be ready for prime time in America.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, this wasn\u2019t just an outlier. Markus said that each trip logged in the F-150 Lightning \u201cconsumed more miles of estimated range than miles traveled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember when you screwed up as a kid, deflected blame, and your parents told you, \u2018It\u2019s not what you did, it\u2019s lying about it that disappointed us\u2019? I\u2019m that parent here, and in this age of machine learning and artificial intelligence, I\u2019m disappointed that Ford is either unable or unwilling to give me the bad news about how far this truck will actually travel on a charge \u2014 especially when destinations are entered into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-indias-push-for-home-grown-navigation-system-jolts-smartphone-giants\/\" title=\"Exclusive-India\u2019s push for home-grown navigation system jolts smartphone giants\">native navigation system<\/a>,\u201d Markus wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yes, it was late winter, and we were running some heat. But we\u2019re also operating 20 miles from Ford\u2019s engineering headquarters, so this climate should be no surprise to the truck\u2019s computers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem is that, unlike competitors designed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-tesla-slashes-prices-across-board-sales-numbers-miss-expectations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EV-only<\/a> from the start, the Ford F-150 Lightning is just what it sounds like: the Ford F-150\u2019s body paired with an electric drivetrain.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, compared with competitors such as the Rivian R1T \u2014 which was designed from the ground up to be electric-only \u2014 the F-150 is, to use Markus\u2019 description, like \u201cshoving a big barn door through the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drag coefficient is 0.44 for the F-150 Lighting, compared with 0.30 to the R1T.<\/p>\n<p>(An EV sedan, the Lucid Air, had a drag coefficient of 0.21, for comparison.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrag force varies with the square of the speed and the added horsepower required to overcome that drag varies with the cube of speed, so while the difference in drag between 70 and 80 mph is 31 percent for any vehicle, the change in actual drag force and horsepower as speeds rise is dramatically higher for the Lightning than in other long-term EVs our Michigan staff has experienced,\u201d Markus wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Now, naturally, the folks in the auto industry aren\u2019t just making internal-combustion vehicles like \u201ca big barn door\u201d because their disregard for the environment is such that they spend their evenings lighting cigars with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/analysis-how-biden-could-bribe-iran-to-restart-nuclear-talks\/\" title=\"ANALYSIS: How Biden Could Bribe Iran To Restart Nuclear Talks\">hundred-dollar bills<\/a> and then tossing them into industrial vats of oil just to cause mass pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Bigger vehicles are safer and roomier, both passenger- and cargo-wise. They\u2019re also a great deal lighter, considering the batteries add a hefty weight penalty to every vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is this a phenomenon that was just noted by MotorTrend.<\/p>\n<p>A reviewer for the Detroit News reported last year that he only got about 170 miles of range from the vehicle, far from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/man-exposes-shocking-amount-electric-truck-driving-range-cut-cold-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advertised 280 from Ford<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/man-tries-towing-10000-pound-trailer-ev-truck-winter-goes-100-miles-gets-worse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube influencer<\/a> found that his Rivian R1T could only get about 100 miles of range while towing another vehicle in cold weather.<\/p>\n<p>And another YouTuber, Tyler Hoover, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/man-exposes-shocking-amount-electric-truck-driving-range-cut-cold-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold his F-150 Lightning<\/a> after finding its \u201cwinter battery performance was a disaster,\u201d noting in a video that mileage could sometimes dip by almost 50 percent in cold weather.<\/p>\n<p>Hoover was still optimistic, telling viewers that \u201cat some point, Ford is probably going to fix this and extend the range of these trucks dramatically, which will probably make these plummet in value, kind of like the early Teslas or a lot of other early cars where they fix the bugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, should you want one with the bugs already sorted out, you could just go with the F-150 that has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-philadelphias-proterra-fleet-in-complete-shambles\/\" title=\"Report: Philadelphia\u2019s Proterra Fleet in Complete Shambles\">internal combustion engine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ford-electric-truck-earns-rangeliar-nickname-road-trip-disaster-asking-money-back\/\">Ford Electric Truck Earns &#8216;RangeLiar&#8217; Nickname After Road Trip Disaster: &#8216;Asking for My Money Back&#8217;<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The Western Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re purchasing a nearly $100,000 electric vehicle, you&#8217;d anticipate accurate information regarding its range.
