If an agreement between the union and the company isn\u2019t reached by then, the workers could begin striking the following day, a move that would have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/visa-and-mastercard-spark-debate-with-latest-crackdown-on-russia\/\" title=\"Visa And Mastercard Spark Debate With Latest Crackdown On Russia\">enormous economic consequences<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Union Determined to Secure Historic Contract<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThis vote shows that hundreds of thousands of Teamsters are united and determined to get the best contract in our history at UPS,\u201d Teamsters General President Sean O\u2019Brien said. &#8220;If this multibillion-dollar corporation fails to deliver on the contract that our hardworking members deserve, UPS will be striking itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The union, which represents more than 340,000 workers, is touting the 97% vote as giving it \u201cmaximum leverage\u201d to negotiate with UPS in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In a Friday statement following the vote, UPS stressed that the move was expected and said the two sides continue to make progress on key matters at the bargaining table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results do not mean a strike is imminent and do not impact our current business operations in any way. Authorization votes and approvals are normal steps in labor union negotiations,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiations between the union and the company began in April. The union is seeking a new five-year agreement that includes higher wages, more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mike-rowe-on-the-15-minimum-wage-unskilled-jobs-are-rungs-on-a-ladder\/\" title=\"Mike Rowe On The  Minimum Wage: Unskilled Jobs Are \u2018Rungs On A Ladder\u2019\">full-time jobs<\/a>, an end to forced overtime, and bolstered workplace hazard protections.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Clear Message to UPS<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThis strike authorization vote sends a clear message to UPS that our members are damned and determined to take necessary action to secure a historic contract that respects their dedication and sacrifice,\u201d union General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>UPS is the largest private-sector unionized employer in the U.S., and a strike could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rugby-research-shows-huge-spike-in-mnd-risk-among-former-international-players\/\" title=\"Rugby-Research shows huge spike in MND risk among former international players\">send shock waves<\/a> through the economy, especially if it drags out. Approximately 6% of the country\u2019s GDP moves through UPS.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien, the union president, replaced James Hoffa as the head of the Teamsters.
