Shannon Phillips, a white woman, was unjustly fired because of her race.<\/p>\n<p>So, how did Starbucks end up with such a hefty fine?<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/13\/nyregion\/starbucks-pay-manager-rittenhouse-square.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>, a seemingly minor misunderstanding escalated into a cultural battle in April 2018 when two black men entered a Philadelphia Starbucks.<\/p>\n<p>One of the men requested to use the restroom, but since they hadn&#8217;t made any purchases, they were denied access.<\/p>\n<p>This led to a confrontation that resulted in the arrest and removal of the two men from the premises.<\/p>\n<div class=\"firefly-embed\">\n<\/div>\n<p>The incident quickly gained attention, with critics accusing Starbucks of racism.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of dismissing these claims, the coffee chain caved in and issued a public apology.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks posted a letter on social media and its <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/press\/2018\/starbucks-ceo-reprehensible-outcome-in-philadelphia-incident\/?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=springfy18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, expressing deep remorse for the incident.
