Could One Provision Make The Whole Thing Backfire?\">\u2019ve encouraged people<\/a> to keep fighting,\u201d Wilk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JuliewithPALs\/status\/1668745458070454274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve changed my mind on that \u2014 if you love your children, you need to flee California. You need to flee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill amends Section 3011 of the Family Code, which deals with child custody disputes, and requires that a court determining the \u201cbest interests\u201d of the child must consider the affirmation of a so-called transgender identity. If a parent were to deny the child\u2019s \u201cgender identity,\u201d it would be a violation of the child\u2019s health, safety, and welfare \u2014 equivalent to child abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Because the bill changes the definition of what constitutes the \u201chealth, safety, and welfare\u201d of a child, any organization interacting with children \u2014 including schools, churches, and hospitals \u2014 would be required to affirm gender transitions in minors.<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u2019s text is ambiguous and general, making no distinctions regarding the age of the child, how long the child has identified as transgender, or the difference between affirming social transitions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sotu-joe-biden-touts-child-transgender-treatments\/\" title=\"SOTU: Joe Biden Touts Child Transgender Treatments\">sex-change treatments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wilk, who was born and raised in California and served in the state legislature for 11 years, said he plans to move after he finishes his term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love this state,\u201d Wilk said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to stay in this state because it\u2019s just too oppressive. I believe in freedom, and so I\u2019m going to move to America when I leave the legislature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Opposition to the bill<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Wilk\u2019s comments were paired with hundreds of parents and family-rights groups who oppose the bill, arguing that it further replaces parental authority with state control.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Erin Friday, branch leader of the pro-parents group Our Duty, argues that AB 957, which would be the first bill in the U.S. to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-state-senator-warns-parents-to-flee-state-after-gender-affirmation-bill-advances\/\" title=\"CA State Senator urges parents to leave state as 'gender-affirmation' bill progresses.\">codify \u201cgender-affirming\u201d denial<\/a> as child abusive, lacks nuance in its language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt matters not the age of the child, the absurdity of the identity adopted, co-morbid mental health issues, or persistence,\u201d Friday said. \u201cFamily court judges will be compelled to favor the parent who affirm the child\u2019s delusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stella O\u2019Malley, an Ireland-based psychotherapist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/california-bill-punish-parents-affirm-childrens-gender-reckless-psychotherapist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Fox News that the California bill introduces a range of issues, including an unclear definition of affirmation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the state of California to bring in a bill based on this new approach is so high-handed and reckless, it\u2019s going to cause an awful lot of distress,\u201d O\u2019Malley said.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Malley runs Genspect, which advocates for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/warner-bros-tv-signs-deal-with-center-for-policing-equity-ceo\/\" title=\"Warner Bros. TV Signs Deal With Center For Policing Equity CEO\">evidence-based approaches<\/a> to gender distress, according to its website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key aspect of the affirmative approach is that it\u2019s child-led,\u201d O\u2019Malley said. \u201cThe affirmative approach believes the child knows better, which is basically denying the immaturity of a child. Never before in the history of mankind have we had children leading adults, have we had children leading professionals in the decisions around their care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assemblywoman Lori Wilson, who authored the bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/laurapowellesq\/status\/1638613364019695616?S=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> children should be affirmed in \u201cevery possible way,\u201d Fox News reported during a March hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The bill now heads to the California State Senate and would need to pass both chambers of legislature before reaching the desk of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.<\/p>\n<p><em>Anthony Cash contributed to this report.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A California Republican lawmaker, Senator Scott Wilk, urged families to leave the state as legislators moved forward with a bill that could label parents as child abusers for not supporting their children&#8217;s self-proclaimed gender identity.
