Teenagers were at the highest risk, with a 130 percent higher risk of depression in women who started using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-republicans-call-for-moving-olympics-from-china-citing-genocide\/\" title=\"Senate Republicans Call For Moving Olympics From China, Citing Genocide\">birth control<\/a> as adolescents, compared to a 92 percent higher risk among those who started as adults.<\/p>\n<p>The study provides conclusive results to a growing body of research <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2552796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">linking<\/a> oral birth control with the use of anti-depressants, depression diagnoses, and <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/article-abstract\/2751923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depressive symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While adult users saw a decrease to more normal risk after using &#8220;the pill&#8221; for more than two years or getting off the pill, teenage users were still at increased risk even after stopping usage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Therese Johansson<\/strong> of the Department of Immunology, Genetics, and Pathology at Uppsala University, a leading researcher on the study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/992224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a> that the extended risk to teenagers could be explained by their recent experiences in puberty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs women in that age group have already experienced substantial hormonal changes, they can be more receptive not only to hormonal changes but also to other life experiences,\u201d Johansson said.<\/p>\n<p>This study only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/study-shows-oral-birth-control-greatly-raises-risk-of-depression-for-women\/\" title=\"Study: Oral Birth Control Significantly Increases Women's Depression Risk\">examined combination birth control pills<\/a>, but researchers plan to study other contraceptive options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a future study, we plan to examine different formulations and methods of administration. Our ambition in comparing different contraceptive methods is to give women even more information to help them make well-informed decisions about their contraceptive options,\u201d Johansson said.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/992224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news release<\/a> from Uppsala University also noted the study shows \u201ca need for healthcare professionals to be more aware of possible links between different systems in the body, such as depression and the use of contraceptive pills.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In other studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-gives-female-inmates-condoms-plan-b-after-state-forces-them-to-stay-with-transgenders\/\" title=\"California Gives Female Inmates Condoms, Plan B After State Forces Them To Stay With Transgenders\">birth control methods<\/a> have also been linked to increased risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/backend\/ptpmcrender.fcgi?accid=PMC6494192&#038;blobtype=pdf#page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heart attack and stroke<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/347\/bmj.f5298.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blood clots<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceu.ox.ac.uk\/news\/any-type-of-hormonal-contraceptive-may-increase-risk-of-breast-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breast cancer<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/hormones\/oral-contraceptives-fact-sheet#:~:text=The%20longer%20a%20woman%20uses,years%20of%20use%20(9).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cervical cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite significant <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/10\/study-says-all-hormonal-birth-control-raises-breast-cancer-risk-but-dont-expect-the-fda-to-tell-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evidence<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/09\/21\/hormonal-birth-control-is-killing-women-why-wont-the-fda-talk-about-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risk<\/a>, researchers still <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/teens\/contraception-birth.html#:~:text=The%20birth%20control%20pill%20is,common%20with%20the%20mini%2Dpill)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insist<\/a> that birth control is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK235069\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safe<\/a> to use, with even Johansson maintaining that birth control is safe because women will not likely experience \u201cnegative effects on their mood\u201d and can avoid \u201cunplanned pregnancies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<hr>\n<p>Samuel Boehlke is a rising senior in Mass Communication\/Law and Policy at Concordia University Wisconsin and a current intern at The Federalist.
