The Estonia-based cryptocurrency exchange Atomic Wallet was targeted, with 5,500 crypto wallets affected. Analysts believe that some of the stolen money could be used to fund the nation\u2019s nuclear and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-korea-reports-covid-19-cases-fires-3-ballistic-missiles\/\" title=\"North Korea Reports COVID-19 Cases, Fires 3 Ballistic Missiles\">ballistic weapons programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cElliptic has attributed this incident to North Korea\u2019s Lazarus Group, which is believed to have stolen over $2 billion in cryptoassets across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/alumni-coalition-pressures-college-leaders-to-fight-anti-semitism\/\" title=\"Alumni Coalition Pressures College Leaders To Fight Anti-Semitism\">multiple thefts<\/a>,\u201d Elliptic said. \u201cThis would mark the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-korean-hackers-suspected-in-100m-crypto-heist-that-could-fund-nuclear-program\/\" title=\"North Korean hackers suspected of stealing 0M in crypto to fund nuclear program.\">major crypto theft publicly attributed<\/a> to Lazarus Group since the $100 million exploit of Horizon Bridge in June 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Lazarus Group is known for targeting South Korean entities for espionage purposes, but has also targeted cryptocurrency exchanges, with an estimated $2 billion in stolen crypto assets. The group was also behind the 2014 Sony hack in response to the release of the movie \u201cThe Interview.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Investigation Underway<\/h3>\n<p>The Estonian National Criminal Police, where Atomic Wallet is located, is investigating the theft. The U.S. Department of Justice refers to Lazarus as a North Korean government-sponsored hacking team. According to the Elliptic analysis, the group has stolen more than $2 billion across multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-to-task-several-federal-agencies-with-conducting-broad-review-of-cryptocurrencies\/\" title=\"White House to Task Several Federal Agencies With Conducting Broad Review of Cryptocurrencies\">crypto heists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Record-Breaking Year for North Korean Crypto Theft<\/h3>\n<p>The United Nations released a report in February that showed North Korea had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-legalizes-recreational-marijuana\/\" title=\"New York Legalizes Recreational Marijuana\">record-breaking year<\/a> for stealing crypto assets in 2022, where hackers reportedly stole upwards of $630 million.
