It was led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who was joined by Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Troy Nehls (R-Texas), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5332726\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/06\/14\/id5332726-0ACDA79F-3CA2-4A16-8E26-2B74FB101803-1200x790.jpeg\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/06\/14\/id5332726-0ACDA79F-3CA2-4A16-8E26-2B74FB101803-1200x790.jpeg\" alt=\"Jan. 6 prisoners panel\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><br \/>\n\t\t(L-R): Reps. Another protestor named Ashli Babbitt, an unarmed Air Force veteran who was shot and killed by Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd was also addressed during the hearing, with Nehls calling for an indictment of Byrd and an investigation into Babbitt\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>A small but outspoken contingent of Republicans has long sought to focus attention on the treatment of Jan. 6 prisoners and their families in the aftermath of the Capitol breach. Greene, who has been a leading force in this push, has said that defendants jailed in connection the Jan. 6 have faced \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/nothing-short-of-human-rights-violations-greene-blasts-treatment-of-jan-6-political-prisoners_4143767.html\">nothing short of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/saudi-court-jails-womens-rights-activist-posing-challenge-for-biden\/\" title=\"Saudi court jails women\u2019s rights activist, posing challenge for Biden\">human rights violations<\/a>,<\/a>\u201d including being deprived of basic hygienic amenities like razors and showers, religious services, and visits from their families.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not only the Jan. 6 prisoners who have suffered, Republicans emphasized during a hearing\u2014family members have also been punished by proxy.<\/p>\n<p>At one point during the hearing, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/soldiers-and-volunteers-testify-to-rushed-and-chaotic-withdrawal-from-afghanistan\/\" title=\"Soldiers and Volunteers Testify to \u2018Rushed and Chaotic Withdrawal from Afghanistan\u2019\">heard emotional testimony<\/a> from Geri Perna, the aunt of Matthew Perna, a nonviolent Jan. 6 convict who took his life after being convicted, unable to face the prospect of years in prison for entering the Capitol on Jan. 6.<\/p>\n<p>Perna said that following the suicide, her brother\u2014Matthew Perna\u2019s father\u2014saw a major decline in his condition. Previously diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s, the suicide decimated her brother\u2019s already fragile health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI speak for my family because Matthew\u2019s father cannot,\u201d Perna told the panel through tears.<\/p>\n<h2>Government Watchlists<\/h2>\n<p>Other witnesses revealed that after the Capitol breach, family members of those accused of having played a role in the breach were placed on government watchlists.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, several family members, including Matthew Perna\u2019s father, were given \u201cquad-S\u201d designation for flying purposes. Quad-S, a designation one level below the no-fly list, is intended for use on potential terrorists and others who, while being allowed to fly, are deemed a high-security risk.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Straka, the founder of the \u201cWalk Away\u201d movement who also testified to the panel, reported that his family, too, had been targeted by the quad-S designation after he appeared at the Capitol on Jan. 6.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4793218\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/10\/13\/GettyImages-1413154101-1200x800.jpg\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/10\/13\/GettyImages-1413154101-1200x800.jpg\" alt=\"Brandon Straka at CPAC\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tBrandon Straka sits in a simulated jail cell during a demonstration at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas, on Aug. 5, 2022. (Brandon Bell\/Getty Images)<br \/>\n\t<\/figure>\n<p>These are not the only American citizens who have faced the dreaded \u201cquad-S\u201d classification on their tickets: Terry Newsome, a Chicago dad who exposed pornographic content in his kid\u2019s school and was present in the capital city on Jan. 6, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/chicago-dad-placed-on-watchlist-after-opposing-pornography-in-schools_4983670.html\">found himself designated quad-S<\/a> with no explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz has already been investigating these allegations, and on June 3, sent a letter to the heads of the Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/chicago-dad-placed-on-watchlist-after-opposing-pornography-in-schools_4983670.html\">demanding answers.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Our Tool to Hold the Government Accountable\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Now, these Republicans are weighing using the House\u2019s power of the purse to respond to these abuses, saying that appropriations are Republicans\u2019 best \u201ctool to hold the government accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters after the conference, Greene discussed possible legislative responses to the abuses reported against Jan. 6 prisoners and their families.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5037916\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/02\/06\/GettyImages-1461145043-1200x808.jpg\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/02\/06\/GettyImages-1461145043-1200x808.jpg\" alt=\"Rep. Appropriations are our tool to hold the weaponized government accountable. And that is what our focus is right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she acknowledged that Republicans would have a fight within their own party to use this tool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a fight,\u201d Greene said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have some of our colleagues that are going to want us just to fund the Department of Justice, with no ramifications whatsoever. But we completely disagree with that. And we will be fighting that all the way.
