If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of first-choice votes in the first round of voting, the last-place finisher is eliminated, and his votes are reallocated to the voter\u2019s second-choice candidate. This process continues until one candidate receives a majority of votes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.maine.gov\/legis\/bills\/display_ps.asp?LD=1917&#038;snum=131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LD 1917<\/a> \u2014 which would expand the use of RCV to gubernatorial and state legislative races \u2014 was passed along party lines by the Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs last month and will now head to the legislature for consideration \u201cin the coming weeks,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ranked-choice-voting-governor-maine-b8136ae966092e5b3756e41c1af1e947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Associated Press (AP)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the AP, LD 1917 must receive two-thirds majority support from the legislature before it can be sent to Maine voters for approval. While Democrats enjoy majorities in both chambers, they would need some Republicans to support the measure for it to pass. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.maine.gov\/LawMakerWeb\/dockets.asp?ID=280087067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Legislation<\/a> seeking to repeal the use of RCV in Maine\u2019s federal elections was introduced earlier this year but did not pass.<\/p>\n<p>Since the implementation of RCV in Maine, residents have witnessed firsthand how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/maine-democrats-scramble-to-rig-state-elections-with-unconstitutional-ranked-choice-voting\/\" title=\"Maine Dems rush to fix state elections with illegal ranked-choice voting.\">system produces outcomes<\/a> that contradict the desires of voters. During the 2018 midterms, then-incumbent GOP Rep. Bruce Poliquin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/maine-congressman-loses-seat-in-controversial-ranked-choice-voting-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost<\/a>\u00a0to Democrat Jared Golden, despite Poliquin winning the most votes in the first round of voting.
