The hearing was closed to cameras and live broadcasts.<\/p>\n<h3>Supporters Gather Outside Courthouse<\/h3>\n<p>Supporters wearing Make America Great Again hats and carrying American flags chanted &#8220;Miami for <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span>&#8221; and &#8220;Latinos for <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span>&#8221; as the motorcade paused outside the courthouse. A man could be heard chanting, &#8220;USA! USA!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Miami mayor Francis Suarez told reporters outside the courthouse that there had not been any security problems. Authorities had braced for crowds of up to 50,000 people and prepared for possible violence, recalling the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n<h3>Trump Proclaims Innocence<\/h3>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence and accuses Democratic president Joe Biden&#8217;s administration of targeting him. He called Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the prosecution, a &#8220;<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span> hater&#8221; on social media on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Smith accuses <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span> of risking national secrets by taking thousands of sensitive papers with him when he left the White House in January 2021 and storing them in a haphazard manner at his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate and his New Jersey golf club, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-under-arrest-in-miami\/\" title=\"Miami police arrest Trump.\">grand jury indictment released<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment alleges <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span> lied to officials who tried to get them back. The indictment of a former U.S. president on federal charges is unprecedented in American history.<\/p>\n<h3>Republican Voters, Rivals Line Up Behind Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Recent events have not dented <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span>&#8216;s hopes of returning to the White House. After his arraignment, <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span> was due to fly from Miami to his New Jersey golf club, where he was scheduled to speak.<\/p>\n<p>Nor have <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span>&#8216;s legal woes hurt his standing with Republican voters. A Reuters\/Ipsos poll released on Monday showed <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span> still led rivals for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election by a wide margin, and 81% of Republican voters viewing the charges as politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never imagined that I was going to witness this. It&#8217;s unbelievable,&#8221; said a woman who gave her first name as Esperanza who carried a sign that read &#8220;I Stand With <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span>&#8221; outside the courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>Most of <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span>&#8216;s Republican rivals for the nomination have lined up behind him. Vivek Ramaswamy, one of those candidates, told the crowd that he would pardon <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span> if he were elected.<\/p>\n<p>Other Republican candidates have accused the FBI of political bias and some have called for its dissolution, in a sharp turn from the party&#8217;s traditional support for law enforcement.<\/p>\n<h3>Legal Experts Say Evidence is Strong<\/h3>\n<p>The 37-count indictment includes violations of the Espionage Act, which criminalizes unauthorized possession of defense information, and conspiracy to obstruct justice, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Legal experts say the evidence amounts to a strong case, and Smith has said <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span>, who will turn 77 on Wednesday, will have a &#8220;speedy&#8221; trial.<\/p>\n<p>The judge assigned to the case, Aileen Cannon, was appointed by <span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Trump<\/span> in 2020 and issued a ruling in his favor during the investigation last year that was reversed on appeal.
