Pritzker has signed a new law that will strip <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/west-virginia-bill-seeks-to-ban-critical-race-theory\/\" title=\"West Virginia Bill Seeks To Ban Critical Race Theory\">state funding<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-public-library-will-not-pull-canceled-dr-seuss-titles-says-it-does-not-censor-books\/\" title=\"New York Public Library Will Not Pull \u2018Canceled\u2019 Dr. Seuss Titles, Says It \u2018Does Not Censor Books\u2019\">public libraries<\/a> that ban books in response to community requests. The law, which takes effect on January 1, 2024, is the first of its kind in the nation to defy efforts to restrict books.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBook bans are about censorship; marginalizing people, marginalizing ideas and facts. Regimes ban books, not democracies,\u201d Pritzker said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Illinois public libraries that restrict access to or ban a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/now-its-ebay-website-reportedly-bans-sale-of-some-dr-seuss-books\/\" title=\"Now It\u2019s eBay: Website Reportedly Bans Sale Of Some Dr. Seuss Books\">book due<\/a> to what the law calls \u201cpartisan or doctrinal\u201d disapproval will lose their state funding. However, Republicans who opposed the law argued that communities should be able to set their own standards.<\/p>\n<h3>Trust in Librarians<\/h3>\n<p>Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias defended the law, saying, \u201cWhat this law does is it says, let\u2019s trust our experience and education of our librarians to decide what books should be in circulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill was presented as an effort to push back against censorship and an environment of suspicion that has led to books being removed from school and local libraries. The American Library Association\u2019s Office for Intellectual Freedom and executive director of the Freedom to Read Foundation praised the legislation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIllinois legislation responds to disturbing circumstances of censorship and an environment of suspicion,\u201d Deborah Caldwell-Stone said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The bill says Illinois public libraries must have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-threatens-to-defund-libraries-banning-lgbt-content-after-becoming-first-state-to-outlaw-book-bans\/\" title=\"Illinois may defund libraries that ban LGBT content, following the state's ban on book bans.\">written policy prohibiting book bans<\/a>, or they must adopt the American Library Association\u2019s Library Bill of Rights, which says \u201cmaterials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation,\u201d or make a similar statement of their own.<\/p>\n<h3>Standing Up for Liberty<\/h3>\n<p>Democratic state Rep. Anne Stava-Murray said, \u201cWhile it\u2019s true that kids need guidance, and that some ideas can be objectionable, trying to weaponize local government to force one-size-fits-all standards onto the entire community for reasons of bigotry, or as a substitute for active and involved parenting, is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Governor Pritzker painted the law as an effort to allow any idea to be shared. \u201cYoung people shouldn\u2019t be kept from learning about the realities of our world; I want them to become critical thinkers, exposed to ideas that they disagree with, proud of what our nation has overcome and thoughtful about what comes next,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone deserves to see themselves reflected in the books they read, the art they see, the history they learn.
