Jordan\u2019s letter, addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland, states that the DOJ has not responded to previous requests about Smith\u2019s probe. Smith was named as special counsel last year, coming months after the FBI raided Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-spy-chief-on-allegedly-classified-documents-virtually-impossible-to-prosecute\/\" title=\"Trump Spy Chief on Allegedly Classified Documents: \"Virtually Impossible\" to Prosecute\">allegedly classified documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s in the Letter?<\/h3>\n<p>Jordan\u2019s letter demands that Garland and the DOJ produce relevant records to his committee by June 20. He also wants an unredacted copy of the memorandum outlining the scope of Mr. Smith\u2019s probes regarding President Trump and any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-investigation-jordan-demands-garland-hand-over-smith-special-counsel-memo\/\" title=\"Jordan demands Garland give up Smith memo in Trump probe.\">supporting documentation related<\/a> to his appointment as special counsel. Jordan did not say what would happen if Garland fails to comply with the demands.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate case, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) have said they would consider holding FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress for failing to produce a document that allegedly reveals a bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<h3>Is the Investigation Tainted?<\/h3>\n<p>Jordan has sent Garland letters concerning whether the Smith investigation into the former president is tainted. It came in light of findings made by special counsel John Durham, who released a lengthy report that signaled that FBI officials acted irresponsibly when the bureau opened an investigation into whether Trump colluded with Russia after the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5172758\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/05\/id5172758-trumpspeech-1200x781.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/04\/05\/id5172758-trumpspeech-1200x781.jpg\" alt=\"Former President Donald Trump speaks during an event at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Fla., on April 4, 2023. Jordan also wants to know if Smith\u2019s investigation uses any information that was gathered by the FBI before Durham\u2019s appointment by then-Attorney General Bill Barr in late 2020. For that demand, Jordan gave Garland until June 20 to respond.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>It remains to be seen whether Garland and the DOJ will comply with Jordan\u2019s demands.
