The Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board voted 3-2 to approve St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, which will be funded by taxpayers and run by the Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEducate the entire child: soul, heart, intellect and body.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Named after the patron saint of the internet, St. Isidore will include religious instruction in its curriculum with a mission to \u201ceducate the entire child: soul, heart, intellect and body.\u201d The school will offer online classes to around 500 students in kindergarten through grade 12 and is set to begin in late 2024. It will receive an estimated $23.3 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/west-virginia-bill-seeks-to-ban-critical-race-theory\/\" title=\"West Virginia Bill Seeks To Ban Critical Race Theory\">state funding<\/a> for its first five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Legal Challenges and Political Divide<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The approval of the religious charter school has sparked controversy and legal challenges. Section II-5 of the Oklahoma State Constitution prohibits public money from being \u201cdirectly or indirectly\u201d used for the \u201cuse, benefit, or support\u201d of churches, religious institutions, and ministers. Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and the ACLU have both announced plans to challenge the school\u2019s constitutionality, stating that \u201cour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cdc-director-schools-are-safe-places-for-kids-during-pandemic\/\" title=\"CDC Director: Schools Are Safe Places for Kids During Pandemic\">public schools<\/a> must be free from religious indoctrination and open to all students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The school\u2019s approval has also divided top state Republicans. While Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt praised the board\u2019s decision, Oklahoma\u2019s Republican attorney general, Gentner Drummond, released a statement saying the school\u2019s approval was \u201ccontrary to Oklahoma law and not in the best interest of taxpayers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Expanding States\u2019 Ability to Fund Religious Schools<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The U.S. Supreme Court delivered two decisions in 2020 and 2022 expanding states\u2019 ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/oklahoma-approves-nations-first-religious-charter-school\/\" title=\"First religious charter school approved in Oklahoma.\">indirectly fund religious schools<\/a> through voucher programs.
