The 79-year-old former FBI agent was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/notorious-supermax-inmate-found-dead-in-his-cell\/\" title=\"Famous Supermax Prisoner Found Dead in Cell.\">serving 15 consecutive life sentences<\/a> for providing national security information to the Soviet Union and Russia over the course of decades.<\/p>\n<p>Hanssen had been incarcerated in a \u201csupermax\u201d federal prison in Colorado, reserved for prisoners of special concern to national security. The information he provided to Russian intelligence cost some KGB personnel operating as double agents for the U.S. government their lives.<\/p>\n<p>FBI Director Louis Freeh described Hanssen\u2019s actions as one of the worst national security breaches in American history. \u201cThe FBI entrusted him with some of its most sensitive matters and the US government relied upon him for his service and integrity,\u201d Freeh said of Hanssen in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Hanssen\u2019s guilty plea allowed him to avoid the death penalty. Some materials he exchanged outlined American strategy in the event of a nuclear war. The spy was ultimately apprehended after a Russian intelligence officer provided materials with Hanssen\u2019s fingerprints and a recording of his voice to the FBI.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of Hanssen\u2019s death is unclear at this time.
