For reference, the <a href=\"https:\/\/educationdata.org\/public-education-spending-statistics#texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cost to educate<\/a> per student in Texas, where most of the UC program spending occurs, is $9,871.<\/p>\n<h3>The Tragic Reality for Unaccompanied Children<\/h3>\n<p>Recent reports show the ORR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/25\/us\/unaccompanied-migrant-child-workers-exploitation.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&#038;referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">losing track<\/a> of some children as quickly as one month after placement. ORR policy is to call a child at their placement to ensure their well-being after a month, but over the last two years, the agency failed to reach more than 85,000 children.<\/p>\n<p>At their sponsorships across the country, many unaccompanied children are \u201cpart of a new economy of exploitation,\u201d overworked to \u201cexhaustion,\u201d and \u201cjuggle classes and heavy workloads\u201d or \u201cwill not be enrolled in school,\u201d according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Under pressure to send money to their families, unaccompanied children are \u201coften [] in debt\u201d to the same sponsors who have been found and vetted by the ORR with taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the sheer number of incoming children, the HHS hires child welfare agencies to track down \u201csome minors who are deemed to be at high risk. But caseworkers at those agencies said that HHS regularly ignored obvious signs of labor exploitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The Government&#8217;s Response<\/h3>\n<p>Recently HHS has faced pressure from a <a href=\"https:\/\/acis-api.flcourts.gov\/courts\/68f021c4-6a44-4735-9a76-5360b2e8af13\/cms\/case\/651d8f68-f322-4cd0-831f-74dc9b0d77a8\/docketentrydocuments\/8437d6e2-1c46-4575-bd21-47de83302c61\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Florida grand jury<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairus.org\/legislation\/biden-immigration-border-policy\/border-security\/inspector-general-government-does-not\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HHS Inspector General<\/a>, both of which raised concerns about the mistreatment of unaccompanied children at the border. Further, an IG report challenged HHS employee vetting processes, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/from-anti-semitic-agitator-to-democratic-power-broker-the-preposterous-resurrection-of-al-sharpton\/\" title=\"From Anti-Semitic Agitator to Democratic Power Broker: The Preposterous Resurrection of Al Sharpton\">grand jury concluded<\/a> the department was \u201cfacilitating the forced migration, sale, and abuse of foreign children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The department\u2019s response? In March, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/hhs-chief-unfamiliar-reports-agency-cant-contact-85000-unaccompanied-migrant-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> he was \u201cunfamiliar\u201d with the reported statistics of missing children and that their \u201cauthorities end\u201d when a sponsor is found.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, the HHS Administration for Children and Families has not responded to a request for comment regarding their efforts to find these children or remove abusive sponsors from their system.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<div>\n<p>Samuel Boehlke is a rising senior in Mass Communication\/Law and Policy at Concordia University Wisconsin and a current intern at The Federalist.
