After one year of building up the young roster, Williams spent the last three seasons in Phoenix winning more games than any other coach in that span.<\/p>\n<p>Just as importantly, Williams helped mold and develop franchise superstar Devin Booker from a one-dimensional scorer to an all-around star. Heck, the culture that Williams cultivated was the same one that attracted superstar Kevin Durant, who arrived via trade last season.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot of positives to turn one\u2019s nose at.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But one team\u2019s loss is another\u2019s gain \u2014 but what a costly gain it is for the Detroit Pistons.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/37770616\/monty-williams-coach-pistons-agrees-record-6-year-785m-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN<\/a>, Williams has come to an agreement on a mammoth six-year, $78.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-republican-assemblyman-calls-for-corruption-investigation-into-newsom\/\" title=\"California Republican Assemblyman Calls for Corruption Investigation Into Newsom\">5 million contract<\/a> with the moribund Detroit Pistons, with the Motor City front office banking (literally) on Williams turning the franchise around like he did in Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>The contract is the \u201clargest coaching deal in NBA history,\u201d according to ESPN.<\/p>\n<p>There is an obvious and considerable risk on the part of the Pistons. Any $78.5 million investment presents some sort of risk.<\/p>\n<p>But for the Pistons, this is a risk well worth taking. Williams, for whatever faults he may have as a coach, works particularly well as a mentor for young men (his issues stem more from when that young team gets older and begins grappling with expectations) and the Pistons are a very young team.<\/p>\n<p>Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham is just 21 years old. The team actually has a glut of talented, young big men. Jalen Duren is 19, Marvin Bagley III is 24, Isaiah Stewart is 22, and James Wiseman is also just 22.<\/p>\n<p>The best part of Williams coaching and mentoring such young talent?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Much of the wisdom that Williams departs stems from his own personal deep well of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tucker-carlsons-faith-god-may-led-fox-news-ouster-bombshell-new-report-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">faith<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Williams is a very public Christian, even dating back to when he first burst onto the coaching scene as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/he-won-a-super-bowl-and-then-joined-the-101st-airborne-division-the-incredible-true-story-of-jake-bequette\/\" title=\"He Won A Super Bowl And Then Joined The 101st Airborne Division: The Incredible True Story Of Jake Bequette\">assistant coach<\/a> for the Philadelphia 76ers.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cI always tell people God makes me look much better than I deserve, and that\u2019s just where it is for me,\u201d Williams told Andscape in 2018. \u201cI don\u2019t like coming off with the fake humility stuff.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Williams continued: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of times within the faith, as a Christian, that most people think we walk around like we have it together, and I just got to be straight with you. The longer you\u2019re walking with the Lord, it\u2019s the exact opposite. It\u2019s like way on the other end. I need the Lord because I don\u2019t have it together. I am broken. I am flawed no matter how I\u2019m viewed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eerily, Williams actually addressed specifically in 2018 why \u201cnot getting signed\u201d wouldn\u2019t be an issue for him thanks to his powerful faith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s winning or losing or getting a contract or not getting signed by a team and all the in-between, my faith allows me to hopefully have something to hold onto that\u2019s much bigger than sports,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou realize you\u2019re not the cat\u2019s meow. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-lebron-james-contemplates-retirement-last-second-blunder-ends-lakers-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Most athletes<\/a>, we feel like we can overcome and withstand anything. There\u2019s been a few times in my career where I couldn\u2019t change the consequences with lifting more weights or getting more shots or whatever the case may have been. And that\u2019s when you realize how small you are and how much you need a relationship with God. And I felt like that was where I started to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Growth, again, is the core strength of Williams\u2019 coaching acumen.<\/p>\n<p>Growth will be what turns the Pistons into perennial playoff contenders.
