Gov Brian Benjamin Arrested For Campaign Finance Scheme\">federal authorities charged<\/a> the tech giant with breaking a children\u2019s privacy law by permanently retaining recordings from its Alexa voice assistant products, the Federal Trade Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/05\/ftc-doj-charge-amazon-violating-childrens-privacy-law-keeping-kids-alexa-voice-recordings-forever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The FTC and the Department of Justice charged Amazon with violating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/legal-library\/browse\/rules\/childrens-online-privacy-protection-rule-coppa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children\u2019s Online Privacy Protection Rule<\/a> and misleading parents and users of Alexa by ignoring their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-outlines-free-speech-policy-proposal\/\" title=\"Trump Outlines Free Speech Policy Proposal\">deletion requests<\/a>, according to the FTC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/woke-amazon-scraps-audience-scores-discovering-tv-viewers-actually-like-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a> agreed to a settlement that compelled the company to revamp its information deletion policies and enforce stricter privacy measures as well as pay a $25 million civil penalty.<\/p>\n<p>The company stopped parents from using their deletion rights bestowed by COPPA and held onto \u201csensitive geolocation and voice information, including children\u2019s voice information,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/ftc_gov\/pdf\/Amazon-Complaint-%28Dkt.1%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complaint<\/a> filed by the DOJ on the FTC\u2019s for purposes such as refining Alexa\u2019s voice recognition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/amazon-fined-25-million-for-misleading-parents-about-what-it-did-with-recordings-of-kids\/\" title=\"Amazon fined M for deceiving parents about kids' recordings.\">natural language processing capabilities<\/a>,\u201d the complaint said.<\/p>\n<h3>Amazon&#8217;s Misleading Claims<\/h3>\n<p>The tech giant told parents that they could delete their child\u2019s data whenever they desired if they used the Echo Dot Kids Edition, FreeTime on Alexa and FreeTime Unlimited on Alexa, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon\u2019s history of misleading parents, keeping children\u2019s recordings indefinitely, and flouting parents\u2019 deletion requests violated COPPA and sacrificed privacy for profits,\u201d Samuel Levine, director of the FTC\u2019s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in the news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOPPA does not allow companies to keep children\u2019s data forever for any reason, and certainly not to train their algorithms,\u201d Levine said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Under the proposed order, Amazon will be required to delete inactive child accounts alleged privacy violation for its home security camera product, Ring, according to an FTC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/05\/ftc-says-ring-employees-illegally-surveilled-customers-failed-stop-hackers-taking-control-users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Amazon&#8217;s Response<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAt Amazon, we take our responsibilities to our customers and their families very seriously,\u201d <a
