This decision rebukes his efforts to bypass Congress and cancel the debt of certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/matt-walsh-on-bidens-bizarre-sotu-behavior-classic-symptom-of-alzheimers\/\" title=\"Matt Walsh On Biden\u2019s Bizarre SOTU Behavior: \u201cClassic Symptom of Alzheimer\u2019s\u201d\">student loan recipients<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The joint resolution of disapproval was passed in a 52-46 vote, with the help of Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cToday, I voted to repeal the Biden Administration\u2019s student loan cancellation proposal because we simply cannot afford to add another $400 billion to the national debt,\u201d Manchin said in a statement, citing a Congressional Budget Office estimate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are already more than 50 existing student loan repayment and forgiveness programs aimed at attracting individuals to vital service jobs, such as teachers, health care workers, and public servants,\u201d he noted. \u201cThis Biden proposal undermines these programs and forces hard-working taxpayers who already paid off their loans or did not go to college to shoulder the cost. Instead, we should be focusing on bipartisan student debt reforms that reduce the cost of higher education and help all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Program<\/h2>\n<p>Biden&#8217;s program initially sought to cancel up to $20,000 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">federal student loan debt<\/a> for roughly 40 million borrowers. It also aimed to extend a national pause on the collection of student loan payments and interest.<\/p>\n<p>However, the plan has been challenged in court, and in November, the Biden administration announced that the payment freeze would not be extended again.<\/p>\n<p>In the coming weeks, the Supreme Court will rule on two challenges relating to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/minority-farmer-loan-forgiveness-program-to-allocate-4b-in-payments-as-part-of-american-rescue-plan\/\" title=\"Minority farmer loan forgiveness program to allocate B in payments as part of American Rescue Plan\">debt relief plan<\/a>. If by June 30, the litigation is not resolved, payments will resume 60 days after June 30. Otherwise, payments will resume 60 days after the court hands down its decision.<\/p>\n<h3>Education Secretary Miguel Cardona&#8217;s Response<\/h3>\n<p>According to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, the court cases challenging the program are \u201ccallous,\u201d \u201cbaseless,\u201d and \u201cjust plain wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want borrowers to know that the Biden-Harris Administration has their backs and we\u2019re as committed as ever to fighting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-overturns-bidens-student-loan-cancellation-plan-setting-up-veto\/\" title=\"Senate rejects Biden's student loan cancellation plan, leading to potential veto.\">deliver essential student debt relief<\/a> to tens of millions of Americans,\u201d Cardona said in a Nov. 22 statement.<\/p>\n<h3>The Supreme Court&#8217;s Opinion<\/h3>\n<p>In March, Chief Justice John Roberts seemed skeptical that Biden had the authority to implement such a sweeping change without congressional approval.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe take very seriously the idea of separation of powers and that power should be divided to prevent its abuse, and there are many procedural niceties that have to be followed for the same purpose,\u201d Roberts said during oral arguments in one of the two cases the court is reviewing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think most casual observers would say, if you\u2019re going to give up that much amount of money, if you\u2019re going to affect the obligations of that many Americans on a subject that\u2019s of great controversy, they would think that\u2019s something for Congress to act on.
