Rand Paul of Kentucky is planning to force the Senate to vote this week on a cut to all federal spending by 5%, which could include entitlements, he announced Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Paul announced the measure as an amendment to the Fiscal Responsibility Act \u2014 the debt limit deal negotiated by the White House and House Republicans \u2014 that was passed by the House of Representatives Wednesday, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paul.senate.gov\/dr-rand-paul-announces-conservative-alternative-to-biden-mccarthy-debt-deal\/\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The amendment would also replace the FRA\u2019s suspension of the debt ceiling with a smaller, $500 billion increase and, Paul said, would achieve a balanced budget by 2028.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBold actions must be taken to defeat our mounting national debt, and my conservative alternative to the Biden-McCarthy deal gives us a real opportunity to get our fiscal house in order,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/rand-paul-dem-gop-lawmakers-creating-inflation-bankrupting-america-omnibus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul<\/a> wrote in his release.<\/p>\n<p>Paul reiterated Thursday that he planned to force a vote on the amendment this week.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This morning I joined <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MorningsMaria?\">@MorningsMaria<\/a> to discuss the upcoming debt deal battle in the Senate and my conservative alternative. I will insist on an amendment vote to enact REAL spending caps that lead to a balanced budget in 5 years! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T1u1IWkeZK\">pic.twitter.com\/T1u1IWkeZK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Rand Paul (@SenRandPaul) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenRandPaul\/status\/1664256039393402880?\">June 1, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Exempting Social Security and Postal from Cuts<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking on background, a spokesperson for Paul said that the amendment will specifically exempt \u201cSocial Security and postal\u201d from cuts.<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether other entitlement programs \u2014 such as Medicare, Medicaid, and federal pension programs for civilian and military employees \u2014 would be cut, they said that no cuts were specified but that \u201cCongress has to make the decisions on what to prioritize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voting on federal entitlement programs has become difficult for congressional Republicans and they have sought to avoid doing so, with House Republicans specifically excluding Social Security and Medicare from proposed spending cuts in exchange for raising the debt limit.<\/p>\n<h3>Reforming Entitlement Programs<\/h3>\n<p>Well<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rand-paul-takes-a-stand-against-debt-bill-reveals-conservative-alternative-to-the-biden-mccarthy-deal\/\" title=\"Rand Paul opposes debt bill, offers conservative alternative to Biden-McCarthy deal.\">-funded senior-citizen interest groups<\/a> such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/politics-society\/advocacy\/info-2023\/poll-social-security-medicare-cuts.html\">American Association of Retired Persons<\/a> \u2014 have strongly opposed any reform of the programs that would reduce benefits, which some conservatives have demanded for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-says-hes-never-been-more-optimistic-about-americas-future-than-now\/\" title=\"Biden Says He's Never Been More Optimistic About America's Future Than Now\">meaningful deficit reduction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Former South Carolina Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/newsweek-reporters-outrageous-email-nikki-haley-wore-shows-everything-wrong-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikki Haley<\/a> has suggested raising the retirement age for Americans in their 20s, as well as limitations to benefits for wealthy recipients and Medicare Advantage, which allows some recipients to receive private insurance that is funded by the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial Security goes bankrupt in 10 years, Medicare goes bankrupt in five.
