The individual in question is writer and YouTube commentator Gonzalo Lira, who was residing in Kharkiv at the time of his arrest. Lira was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russia-opens-criminal-case-against-ally-of-kremlin-critic-navalny\/\" title=\"Russia opens criminal case against ally of Kremlin critic Navalny\">outspoken critic<\/a> of Zelenskyy\u2019s regime and was arrested for justifying Putin\u2019s invasion. Lira was a former contributor at the Insider and is a dual citizen of Chile and the United States. He has been critical of the Ukrainian position in the war and supportive of Russia\u2019s President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<h3>State Department Refuses to Help<\/h3>\n<p>During a news briefing, Epoch Times reporter Liam Cosgrove raised the question of the arrested U.S. citizen. When Cosgrove asked if the State Department was working on getting Lira released, spokesman Matthew Miller refused to provide further comment. \u201cWe obviously support the exercise of freedom of speech anywhere in the world, and I\u2019ll leave it at that,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. journalist Sarah Ashton-Cirillo, who is now a volunteer in the Ukrainian army, said, \u201cThis justice has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-criminal-justice-system-reform-law-criticized-by-police\/\" title=\"Illinois Criminal Justice System Reform Law Criticized By Police\">long time coming<\/a>.
