In a statement to the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> on Friday, California&#8217;s governing body for high school sports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/highschool\/story\/2023-05-26\/cif-state-transgender-athletes-withdrawing-track-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it was &#8220;disappointed&#8221; that &#8220;the actions of others&#8221; led the students and their families to fear for their &#8220;well-being.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The CIF strongly denounces discriminatory or harassing behaviors that impact our student-athletes\u2019 opportunities to participate in interscholastic competitions,&#8221; the California Interscholastic Federation said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan and Barrett&#8217;s no-shows at the championships were an anticlimactic finish to a week of protests and public debate over the runners&#8217; qualification for the elite meet. Similar disagreements erupted elsewhere in the country as transgender-identifying boys competed in girls&#8217; track championships in Washington State, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<h3>Advocacy Group Speaks Out<\/h3>\n<p>The Independent Council on Women\u2019s Sports, an advocacy group, helped publicize the outcry against transgender-identifying boys&#8217; participation in female sports. ICONS cofounder Kim Jones said many girls and parents fear speaking out will lead to retaliation or loss of collegiate scholarships or other athletic opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are people saying we shouldn\u2019t be talking about kids in sports, but we have a moral imperative to share the truth,&#8221; Jones said in a statement. &#8220;Girls placed in dangerous and unfair situations are deflated and left to believe their fair treatment doesn\u2019t matter as much as not hurting a boy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She added that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/transgender-identifying-boys-are-no-show-at-california-track-championships\/\" title=\"Transgender boys didn't participate in California Track Championships.\">schools\u2019 policies letting trans-identifying males compete<\/a> with girls &#8220;are ripping apart women\u2019s sports.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>State Laws and Policies<\/h3>\n<p>California law has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.ca.gov\/re\/di\/eo\/faqs.asp\">required<\/a> schools to allow transgender students to compete on the single-sex teams they identify with since 2014. The California Interscholastic Federation bylaws <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifstate.org\/governance\/constitution\/Constitution_and_Bylaws.pdf\">state<\/a> that &#8220;students should have the opportunity to participate in CIF activities in a manner that is consistent with their gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on a student\u2019s records.&#8221; The federation does not address <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9331831\/#B44-ijerph-19-09103\">evidence<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bmj.com\/bjsm\/2021\/01\/22\/testosterone-and-transgender-athletic-performance-finding-a-path-for-inclusion-for-transgender-athletes\/\">that<\/a> men, even those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/father-arrested-jailed-for-contempt-after-referring-to-his-daughter-as-she\/\" title=\"Father Arrested, Jailed For Contempt After Referring To His Daughter As \u2018She\u2019\">taking cross-sex hormones<\/a>, are much stronger and faster than women on average.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/defend-scotus-ads-beacon?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=beaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023maybeaconscotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winred.tomcotton.com\/tom-cotton\/defend-scotus-ads-beacon?utm_source=rc&#038;utm_medium=beaconads&#038;utm_campaign=2023maybeaconscotus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nationwide, since 2020, at least 21 states have enacted laws or policies that ban transgender-identifying boys from playing on school sports teams with women and girls, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtmap.org\/equality-maps\/youth\/sports_participation_bans\">according to<\/a> the Movement Advancement Project. Meanwhile, 16 states and the District of Columbia have transgender-&#8220;friendly&#8221; high school sports policies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transathlete.com\/\">according to<\/a> the Transathlete website.<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans last month <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/house-passes-ban-on-trans-athletes-in-girls-sports\/\">passed<\/a> a bill to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/utah-house-moves-forward-with-bill-to-ban-transgender-athletes-in-school-sports\/\" title=\"Utah House Moves Forward With Bill To Ban Transgender Athletes In School Sports\">ban transgender athletes<\/a> from participating in female school sports, but President Joe Biden promised to veto the legislation, which cannot advance anyway in the Democrat-controlled Senate. Last week, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/restoring-america\/equality-not-elitism\/biden-title-ix-transgender-sports-rules-delayed\">delayed<\/a> new Title IX rules that would restrict schools&#8217; ability to bar transgender athletes from female sports, saying it needed more time to review more than 240,000 comments about the proposal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two transgender boys withdrew from California&#8217;s high school track and field championships, which officials suggested was due to discrimination.
