She also criticized her House Republican colleagues for not doing enough to refute former President Donald Trump\u2019s statements regarding the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAfter the 2020 election and the attack of January 6th, my fellow Republicans wanted me to lie. They wanted me to say the 2020 election was stolen, the attack of January 6th wasn\u2019t a big deal, and Donald Trump wasn\u2019t dangerous,\u201d Cheney claimed on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI had to choose between lying and losing my position in House leadership,\u201d Cheney continued.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cheney also encouraged more women to run for government and criticized one of Trump\u2019s lawyers, Cleta Mitchell, for recent comments she made regarding college students voting.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cCleta Mitchell, an election denier and adviser to former President Trump, told a gathering of Republicans recently that it is crucially important to make sure that college students don\u2019t vote,\u201d Cheney said. \u201cThose who are trying to unravel the foundations of our republic, who are threatening the rule of law and the sanctity of our elections, know they can\u2019t succeed if you vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While Cheney was speaking, a majority of the audience cheered, but some people booed loudly and even turned their chairs away from the podium.<\/p>\n<p>Despite rumors that she may run in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, Cheney did not discuss her own political future or Trump\u2019s reelection bid in her speech.<\/p>\n<h3>Cheney\u2019s Strong Platform<\/h3>\n<p>Cheney\u2019s adamant opposition to Trump and her position as vice chairwoman of the House committee gave her a strong platform from which to solicit financial backing for a White House bid. Super PACs set up to back her campaign are still active, and this month they even paid to run attack commercials against Trump on radio stations in New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>Cheney was assigned to a professorship at the University of Virginia after leaving office. She left because she was succeeded by a Trump-backed Republican who had defeated her in the previous year\u2019s primary.
