During a May 28 appearance on Fox News Sunday, McCarthy praised the deal for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/theres-so-much-in-this-thats-positive-mccarthy-defends-debt-ceiling-deal-amid-gop-backlash\/\" title=\"McCarthy defends debt ceiling deal despite GOP backlash, sees positives.\">provisions cutting federal expenditures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Details of the Agreement<\/h3>\n<p>On the evening of May 27, McCarthy announced during a press conference that he and Biden had reached what he called \u201can agreement in principle that\u2019s worthy of the American people\u201d to raise the debt ceiling. In addition to raising the debt ceiling, the bill would:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cap non-defense spending at its previous levels<\/li>\n<li>Enhance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/romney-cotton-to-propose-10-minimum-wage-with-mandatory-e-verify\/\" title=\"Romney, Cotton To Propose  Minimum Wage With Mandatory E-Verify\">work requirements<\/a> for government assistance<\/li>\n<li>Reclaim unspent COVID-19 relief funds<\/li>\n<li>And more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, some Republicans are unhappy with the deal. Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) called it a \u201csurrender,\u201d while Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) reiterated his demand for Republicans to \u201chold the line\u201d on their demands and wait for a better deal. Others, like Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), and Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) have also indicated their opposition to the broad outlines of the package.<\/p>\n<h3>McCarthy&#8217;s Defense<\/h3>\n<p>McCarthy suggested that these criticisms are mistaken, however. He praised the tentative deal for its provisions cutting federal expenditures and fully funding veterans and defense. He also highlighted the work requirements for cash welfare and food stamps.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy said the deal would also \u201cstreamline\u201d the process of building new infrastructure.
