In addition to raising the debt ceiling, the bill would cap non-defense spending at its previous levels, enhance work requirements for government assistance, and reclaim unspent COVID-19 relief funds, among other measures.<\/p>\n<p>According to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Congress has until June 5, a date she called a \u201chard\u201d deadline, to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a default. Such a default would decimate the value of an already-debased U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/san-francisco-school-officials-unions-reach-tentative-deal-after-city-files-lawsuit\/\" title=\"San Francisco School Officials, Unions, Reach Tentative Deal After City Files Lawsuit\">tentative deal<\/a> is one that leaves neither Republicans nor Democrats entirely happy, and congressional leaders still face the challenge of advancing the deal through both chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, McCarthy seemed confident he could get the bill over the finish line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI think you are going to get a majority of Republicans voting for this bill,\u201d<\/strong> McCarthy said on Fox News Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy said that though he\u2019s been in regular communication with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), he has not yet asked Democrats for support to get the bill over the finish line in the House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, the Democrats are very upset. The one thing Hakeem told me: \u2018There is nothing in the bill for them,\u2019\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have pushed for a \u201cclean\u201d debt ceiling increase with no strings attached. For months, Biden refused to negotiate, demanding that Republicans concede on the issue and pass a clean package.<\/p>\n<h2>Divisions<\/h2>\n<p>The compromise arrangement has also proved divisive for Republicans, several of whom say they won\u2019t vote for it.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) called it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/surrender-chorus-of-republicans-disappointed-with-debt-ceiling-agreement_5296327.html\">\u201csurrender.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur base didn\u2019t volunteer, door knock and fight so hard to get us the majority for this kind of compromise deal with Joe Biden,\u201d Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) said on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/laurenboebert\/status\/1662651545316388871\">Twitter<\/a>. \u201cOur voters deserve better than this. We work for them.\u00a0You can count me as a NO on this deal. (Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>According to some reports, the deal would raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion\u2014$2.5 trillion more than Republicans agreed to authorize in the Limit, Save, Grow Act.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) said that this fact alone makes supporting the bill unjustifiable for conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one claiming to be a conservative could justify a YES vote\u201d for a $4 trillion increase, Good said.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, other Republicans have expressed their disappointment with the deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House (R-Calif.), expressed confidence in securing votes for a potential debt ceiling agreement with President Joe Biden.
