This legislation bars individuals from being discriminated against for their height and weight when it comes to employment or public housing.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt shouldn\u2019t matter how tall you are or how much you weigh when you\u2019re looking for a job, are out on the town, or trying to rent an apartment,\u201d Adams said at the Friday signing ceremony. \u201cNo one should ever be discriminated against based on their height and weight. We all deserve the same access to employment, housing, and public accommodations, regardless of our appearance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Any incidents of weight discrimination will be investigated by the New York City Commission on Human Rights.<\/p>\n<h3>Controversy Surrounding the New Law<\/h3>\n<p>New York City Republican City Councilman Joseph Borelli warned in April that the new law will \u201cempower people to sue anyone and everything.\u201d However, Mayor Adams believes that this legislation is necessary to ensure that everyone has equal access to opportunities.<\/p>\n<h3>Public Policy Following Culture<\/h3>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s latest legislation illustrates another hallmark example where public policy follows culture. Obesity had already become a protected class under the hierarchy of oppression outlined by left-wing social justice standards for years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In January, TIME Magazine stigmatized exercise as white supremacist.<\/li>\n<li>In April, Lizzo, an icon of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/heart-failure-kills-body-positivity-activist-at-37\/\" title=\"Heart Failure Kills \u2018Body Positivity\u2019 Activist At 37\">pro-fat movement disguised<\/a> as \u201cbody positivity,\u201d railed against \u201coppression\u201d at the Video Music Awards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, if Lizzo were a true crusader for social justice, she\u2019d blast the food industry for driving the weight epidemic today, wherein black Americans have the highest prevalence of obesity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/30\/is-lizzo-really-oppressed-or-is-she-an-oppressor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Is Lizzo Really Oppressed, Or Is She An Oppressor?<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The Ultimate Victims?<\/h3>\n<p>In her book, \u201cYou Have the Right to Remain Fat,\u201d San Francisco author and activist Virgie Tovar describes fat people as the ultimate victims. \u201cFatphobia\u201d is the \u201cnew language of classism and racism,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is no accident that fat people are underrepresented in the workplace, academia, and mass media,\u201d Tovar added. <\/p>\n<h3>Impact on Disabilities and Air Travel<\/h3>\n<p>As obesity trends rise, so does the number of people with disabilities, unable to perform tasks critical to jobs with physical demands. Overweight airline passengers have also begun circulating online petitions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-city-mayor-makes-obesity-a-protected-class\/\" title=\"NYC Mayor Protects Obesity as a Class.\">mandate airlines offer free seats<\/a> and bigger bathrooms to accommodate obese travelers.
