It\u2019s one of two stories published on the same day, alongside a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/north-dakota-gov-doug-burgum-poised-to-enter-gop-presidential-race-d6676d43\">Wall Street Journal article<\/a>, generating buzz for the little-known official.<\/p>\n<p>Burgum would be the latest addition to a rapidly growing field.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis launched their campaigns in the past several days, joining former President Donald Trump, ex-South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and a range of other minor candidates.<\/p>\n<p>A former Microsoft executive and McKinsey consultant, Burgum has been in office since 2016. His run that year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/former-microsoft-executive-doug-burgum-seeks-to-run-north-dakota_2083931.html\">drew comparisons from the Associated Press<\/a> to now ex-Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner, formerly the chairman of a private equity firm.<\/p>\n<p>Burgum\u2019s net worth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/rich-wealthiest-governors-150108514.html\">is estimated<\/a> at $1.1 billion, making him one of America\u2019s richest governors behind Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and West Virginia Governor Jim Justice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4577380\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/07\/05\/GettyImages-1394091265.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Illinois Gov. (Scott Olson\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>The North Dakotan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kxnet.com\/news\/top-stories\/lawmakers-push-back-against-burgums-pac-spending\/\">made headlines<\/a> in 2022 for spending tied to the Dakota Leadership Political Action Committee (PAC), a PAC closely linked with him.<\/p>\n<p>The committee targeted members of the North Dakota legislature\u2019s conservative \u201cBastiat Caucus,\u201d perceived as to the right of Burgum.<\/p>\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inforum.com\/opinion\/columns\/port-former-staffer-for-gov-burgum-texts-mocking-messages-to-bastiat-legislative-candidate\">2022 opinion column<\/a> unfriendly to the caucus linked it to \u201ca new breed of Trumpy culture warrior populists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In that same election cycle, the PAC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/political-action-committees-pacs\/dakota-leadership-pac\/C00688549\/candidate-recipients\/2022\">donated to<\/a> Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa), a key player in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucus.<\/p>\n<p>Feenstra, who primaried former Iowa Congressman Steve King in 2020, has hosted a range of candidates and potential candidates at his Feenstra Family Picnic.<\/p>\n<p>Guests have included Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, and, most recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntd.com\/desantis-seizes-opportunity-as-trump-cancels-iowa-event_919368.html\">DeSantis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5288119\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2023\/05\/24\/id5288119-Ron-DeSantis.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Florida Gov. Bukaty\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<p>Scott will host a town hall with Feenstra in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on June 2.<\/p>\n<p>The North Dakota governor\u2019s entry into contention for 2024 drew mixed reactions on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsa Hutchinson formally entered the presidential race a month ago today. Does anyone remember that? Does anyone even remember he\u2019s in the race at all? That\u2019s where Doug Burgum is going to be in the first week of July: an afterthought to an afterthought,\u201d historian Varad Mehta <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/varadmehta\/status\/1662109865261539328\">wrote<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoug Burgum is a billionaire self-funder governor who could make his mark quickly after declaring.
